A full-scale study was performed of a centrifuge-based process for dewatering oilfield production waste sludges in order to investigate an application of the process to an oilfield production pit closure. Full-scale experiments were performed to analyze the centrifugal sedimentation of both raw and chemically destablized production pit sludge. The two-stage process was tested: primary solids removal by centrifugal classification followed by chemical conditioning and dewatering. Also, full-scale tests were run to understand the effects of the fundamental centrifuging parameters (the bowl-scroll differential speed and the centrifugal force) on the composition and quality of the dewatering products. The concentration of metals in the production pit sludge, before and after dewatering, was analyzed in terms of the present environmental regulations. The removal of heavy metals from the centrifuge overflow was also evaluated. This study provided qualitative information on how to design an on-site, centrifuge-based system for oilfield production pits closure. The system yielded up to 60 percent volume reduction, the solids-free effluent, and the low-moisture (42 percent vol.) cake discharge. The side-product of the process was an oily, low-solids emulsion (skim layer). The study revealed a technique for minimizing the skim layer through a compromise between the centrifugal force and the differential speed.

This paper reports the development of nonwoven fabric by needle-punching technique for filter press application in textile effluent treatment plant. For filter press development, the nonwoven fabric was reinforced with the nylon scrim as the central layer in order to withstand the filtration pressure. The nonwoven fabrics were developed using different denier polyester fibres and changing punch density. The influence of fibre fineness and punch density on the properties of nonwovens was investigated. The filtration parameters such as filtration efficiency, dewatering efficiency, blinding tendency and cake discharge properties of the developed nonwoven filter fabrics filter fabrics were evaluated and compared with existing woven fabric filter media. The influence of calendering on the filtration properties of the nonwovens was also studied. The results showed that bursting strength of the developed nonwovens increased with increase in fibre fineness and decrease in punch density. It was also found that the air permeability of the developed nonwovens varied inversely in relation to punch density and the proportion of fine fibres. It was observed that developed nonwovens had 8% higher filtration efficiency and 6% higher dewatering efficiency compared to the existing woven fabric filter media. The blinding resistance and cake discharge properties were slightly lower than that of woven fabric filter. It was found that calendering improves filtration properties of the developed nonwoven fabrics.

In order to meet the needs of recovery production of filtering and washing of fine powder of rare metal, a device has been developed which is a set ultra-fine filter, mixing washing, dry-pressed cake, cake discharge and microporous regeneration, etc. in one integral device, and all steps can be completed once using it in a confined space. In addition, a number of key technologies were advanced that can be realized by the device, including recycling technologies, polymer ultra-fine filter technology, equipment and structural design, workflow design, etc. The device has many advantages, such as high filtration precision, high recovery rate, high efficiency production, simple operation, high degree of automation and less environmental pollution. Fine powder of rare metal is generally prepared by electrochemical or chemical production method, wherein filtering and washing are two important processes. Filtering, washing, recovery technology and equipment progressiveness have a direct impact on products quality, resources loss, energy consumption, costs, environment and other problems. Design of a new ultra-precision filtering and washing equipment of fine powder of rare metal and its advanced recycling technology are of great significance.

Various devices in liquid-solid separation require mechanical cake discharge using different technologies. An incomplete cake discharge causes yield losses, cycle time increase, irregular cake formation, high mechanical constraints which decrease medium life time, excess consumption of cleaning liquors…. Currently, cake discharge is only assessed qualitatively by observations of filter cloth after discharge or quantitatively by weighing recovered solids. A prototype has been developed to carry out reliable and repeatable measurements by removing filter cloth from filter cake by shearing. This study presents results of experiments performed with calcium carbonate (which forms sticky cakes) and discusses the conditions of cake formation and cake detachment from filter cloth. It highlights the role of two main parameters: filter cloth characteristics and pressure.
