AbstractTwo cases of fulminating meningococcal septicaemia with Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome are reported in young servicemen. Both were complicated by peripheral gangrene of unusual severity, which required the modification of standard surgical procedures to meet their individual requirements. The rationale of management is discussed in the light of the pathological processes involved, and views are advanced on the place of steroids and heparin in the acute stage.
