AbstractSwept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) is an attractive high-speed imaging technique for retinal angiography. However, conventional swept lasers vary the cavity length of the laser mechanically to tune the output wavelength. This causes sweep-timing jitter and hence low phase stability in OCT angiography. Here, we improve an earlier phase-stabilized, akinetic, SS-OCT angiography (OCTA) method by introducing coherent averaging. We develop an active mode-locking (AML) laser as a high phase-stable akinetic swept source for the OCTA system. The phase stability of the improved system was analyzed, and the effects of coherent averaging were validated using a retina phantom. The effectiveness of the coherent averaging method was further confirmed by comparing coherently and conventionally averaged en face images of human retinal vasculature for their contrast-to-noise ratio, signal-to-noise ratio, and vasculature connectivity. The contrast-to-noise ratio was approximately 1.3 times larger when applying the coherent averaging method in the human retinal experiment. Our coherent averaging method with the high phase-stability AML laser source for OCTA provides a valuable tool for studying healthy and diseased retinas.

A novel bulk optics scheme for quantum walks is presented. It consists of a one-dimensional lattice built on two concatenated displaced Sagnac interferometers that make it possible to reproduce all the possible trajectories of an optical quantum walk. Because of the closed loop configuration, the interferometric structure is intrinsically stable in phase. Moreover, the lattice structure is highly configurable, as any phase component perceived by the walker is accessible, and finally, all output modes can be measured at any step of the quantum walk evolution. We report here on the experimental implementation of ordered and disordered quantum walks.

Two-step sintering was performed to prepare hydroxyapatite (HAp) with a high density and a fine microstructure utilizing hydrothermally synthesized nano powders. Its effectiveness was dependent on starting chemicals for precursors of HAp, powder processing condition, initial temperature in the two-step sintering, heating rate to the initial temperature, and holding time at final temperature. HAp powder, hydrothermally treated after aging of precipitate of Ca(OH)2 and H3PO4 for 48 h, led to HAp having a high phase stability at elevated temperatures, a high density, and a fine microstructure after two-step sintering with heating rate of 10°C/min to 1275°C.

Phase stability and transport properties of (ZrO2)0.91−x(Sc2O3)0.09(Yb2O3)x crystals (x = 0–0.01) have been studied before and after air annealing at 1000 °C for 400 h. The crystals have been grown by radio frequency (RF) heating in a cold crucible. The microstructure, phase composition, and electrical conductivity of the crystals have been studied using optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and impedance spectroscopy. Phase stability and degradation of ionic conductivity of the crystals upon long-term high-temperature heat treatment have been discussed. We show that the stabilization of ZrO2 co-doped with 9 mol.% Sc2O3 and 1 mol.% Yb2O3 provides transparent uniform crystals with the pseudocubic t″ phase structure having high phase stability. Crystals of this composition had the highest conductivity in the entire temperature range. Long-term high-temperature annealing of these crystals did not lead to conductivity degradation.
