This article focuses on digital humanities and Renaissance studies in Canada, highlighting established projects such as Iter and newer efforts such as Serai, and addressing recent interest in historical GIS. This survey of projects demonstrates how the work of Renaissance studies faculty and graduate students in Canada is increasing accessibility to sources, creating new knowledge environments and spaces for collaboration, and encouraging new ways to map and visualize Renaissance data, with an end result that enhances our understanding of the past and the ways that digital technology is changing humanities scholarship. The article also suggests that from the perspective of graduate students, participation in these endeavours provides not only training in digital technologies but also the opportunity to contribute knowledge to the field in concrete ways and the chance to establish a foundation in methodologies and practices that will shape approaches to Renaissance studies research and teaching in the future. Cet article se penche sur les humanités numériques et les études de la Renaissance au Canada, en présentant des projets établis tels qu’Iter et plus récents tels que Serai, ainsi qu’en examinant l’intérêt plus récent pour le système d’information géographique (SIG) historique. Ce survol de différents projets montre comment le travail de professeurs et d’étudiants aux études supérieures dans le domaine améliore l’accès aux sources, créent des environnements pour de nouvelles connaissances et des espaces de collaboration, et favorisent de nouvelles façons de visualiser des données relatives à la Renaissance, enrichissant ainsi notre compréhension du passé, tout en mettant en lumière les transformations des sciences humaines provoquées par les technologies numériques. Cet article avance également qu’en ce qui concerne les étudiants aux études supérieures, la participation dans ces projets non seulement leur donne de l’expérience en humanités numériques, mais leur donne aussi la chance de pouvoir contribuer de façon concrète à l’avancement des connaissances dans leur domaine. Ces expériences leur donne également l’opportunité de développer une méthode et des pratiques qui détermineront leurs approches dans leur recherche et leur enseignement à venir en études de la Renaissance.

This article presents a practical demonstration of a decentralized pharmacy system improving the quality of pharmaceutical services. The authors explain the working system of a satellite pharmacy in one of the pavilions of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona, Spain. Clinical pharmacists working in this satellite become deeply involved in drug information, quality control programs, pharmacokinetics, patient education, research, and teaching activities.


Our successors in medical research will read, with amused tolerance, our frequent agonized protests that the volume of literature which we should comprehend exceeds our capacity. Those of us who teach and write text-books for medical students and practitioners are forced to depend more and more upon the review journals. The number and breadth of the fields in which one can pose, even transiently, as an authority are diminishing rapidly. But if one looked only at this aspect of the picture an ageing outlook on the most fascinating of all games, medical research and teaching, might be suggested. The appearance of new authorities is most stimulating, and it is refreshingly obvious that the soaring rate of publication has not inhibited research. We must co-ordinate the abstracting services in our field, continue the struggle to eliminate unworthy papers, hope for even better colloquia and review journals, and confidently expect that the next fifty years will contribute more to medical science than has the past vigorous half-century. The award of the Croonian Lectureship has given me exceptional pleasure and a sense of great responsibility. In selecting a title I have considered the principal subjects in which I have endeavoured to keep abreast, and the choice has thus been narrowed to insulin and experimental diabetes, heparin and thrombosis, and the dietary factor choline and its precursors, which we have termed the lipotropic agents. Certain of the effects of these three substances might be discussed in a single lecture, since they all affect either the formation, distribution or the state of fat in the body. The action of a lipokinetic constituent of the anterior pituitary, first clearly demonstrated in our laboratory in 1936 (Best & Campbell), which increases the rate of mobilization of depot fat to the liver (Barrett, Best & Ridout 1938; Stetten & Salcedo 1944), might also have been included. The fat-mobilizing effect of anterior pituitary extracts may be due to Evans’s somatotropin, to the adrenocorticotropic hormone, to a more specific but as yet unidentified substance or, of course, to more than one of these. The four factors, insulin, choline, heparin and ‘adipokinin’ (Weil & Stetten 1947) have given us a measure of control over fat metabolism which our predecessors did not enjoy. There are, of course, other dietary and hormonal agents affecting these processes which one would have to discuss in a comprehensive treatment of the field. I shall not even list these and, indeed, after a very brief consideration of insulin and heparin, particularly in relation to fat metabolism, I shall limit my discussion to ‘the lipotropic agents’.

Abstract One expects people with graduate training in economics to have a deeper understanding of economic processes and reasoning than people without such training. However, as others have noted over the past 25 years, modern graduate education may emphasize mathematics and technique to the detriment of economic reasoning. One of the most important contributions economics has to offer as a discipline is the understanding of opportunity cost and how to apply this concept to all forms of decision making. We examine how PhD economists answer an introductory economics textbook question that requires identifying the relevant opportunity cost of an action. The results are not consistent with our expectation that graduate training leads to a deeper understanding of the concept. We explore the implications of our results for the relevance of economists in policy, research, and teaching.

Even though the relationship between teaching and research has been examined extensively over the past decade, and a number of published articles and seminar based workshops exist (Hattie and Marsh, 1996) ; there continues to be a disconnect in the application and integration of these two concepts in the academic setting. This difficulty may be due to the perception that teaching and research are two separate entities that need to be fitted together (Boyer 1990). An alternative approach to understanding these two concepts is to envision them as one entity consisting of two components that feed off of each other. That is, as academics, our goal is to engage in a single entity identified as scholarly activities. These activities should present themselves as an amalgamation of teaching and research. To have a scholarly presence, an academic must not only be competent in both areas, but must consistently demonstrate the relationship between their teaching and research throughout their tenure. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of strategies academics can consider as they continue to refine and develop their program of scholarship. A summary of the relationship between teaching and research will be provided, followed by a presentation of various methods that can enhance the teaching and research relationship both within and outside of the classroom environment.

Public support for research depends, in part, on the eventual societal benefits from research. Maintaining that support likely requires sustained engagement between the research community and the broader public. Yet, there is little organized effort to evaluate and reward such engagement in addition to research and teaching activities. Using data from an international survey of 1092 researchers (634 established researchers and 458 students) in 55 countries and 315 research institutions, we find that institutional recognition of engagement activities is perceived as being undervalued relative to its societal benefit. Many researchers report that their institutions would not reward engagement activities despite mission statements promoting engagement. Further, those institutions that actually measure engagement activities are perceived to do so in a limited capacity (respondents perceived that on average, 2 of the 7 dimensions of engagement we considered were reflected in evaluations). Most researchers are strongly motivated to engage for selfless reasons, which suggests that strong self-oriented incentives may have unintended effects. Perhaps by recognizing the important engagement activities of researchers, institutions can better achieve their institutional missions and bolster the crucial contributions of researchers to society.

Research exploring the gendered dimensions of adult learning has blossomed in the past two decades. Despite this trend, intersectional approaches in adult learning, research, and teaching remain limited primarily to the three categories of gender, race, and class. Intersectionality theory is more diverse than this and includes discussions of social structures, geographies, and histories that serve to build richer, more nuanced descriptions of how privilege and oppression are experienced. Because the purpose of intersectionality is to understand how social identities are constructed and to challenge the structures of power that oppress particular social groups, this approach is important for feminist and social justice educators. The Canadian authors of this manuscript posit that adult learning should move beyond intersectionality that focuses only on the trinity of gender + race + class in order to consider the nuances of inequality and the true complexities of representation and collective identities. By exploring literature in feminism, adult education, and intersectionality, they illustrate a gap at the core of adult education for social justice. Finally, they use two examples to illustrate how intersectionality works in practice.

Theoretical and methodological bases of preparing students for research and teaching activities in a diverse cultural environment): The readiness of university students of pedagogical specialties for research activities are the backbone basis for professional pedagogical activity. This is determined by the complexity and contradictions of modern life, and of the socio-cultural and educational environment. The considerable creativity in a diverse environment is conditioned by a combination of negative factors. The dynamic diversity of the environment and its diverse impact on individual and social groups require a revision of the existing educational technologies, means and forms of teacher education. New systems of teaching students will be effective when they are built on leading theoretical and methodological models of professional activity.
