Abstract We consider a locally path-connected compact metric space K with finite first Betti number $\textrm {b}_1(K)$ and a flow $(K, G)$ on K such that G is abelian and all G-invariant functions $f\,{\in}\, \text{\rm C}(K)$ are constant. We prove that every equicontinuous factor of the flow $(K, G)$ is isomorphic to a flow on a compact abelian Lie group of dimension less than ${\textrm {b}_1(K)}/{\textrm {b}_0(K)}$ . For this purpose, we use and provide a new proof for Theorem 2.12 of Hauser and Jäger [Monotonicity of maximal equicontinuous factors and an application to toral flows. Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.147 (2019), 4539–4554], which states that for a flow on a locally connected compact space the quotient map onto the maximal equicontinuous factor is monotone, i.e., has connected fibers. Our alternative proof is a simple consequence of a new characterization of the monotonicity of a quotient map $p\colon K\to L$ between locally connected compact spaces K and L that we obtain by characterizing the local connectedness of K in terms of the Banach lattice $\textrm {C}(K)$ .

CF-graphs form a class of multigraphs that contains all simple graphs. We prove a lower bound for the average genus of a CF-graph which is a linear function of its Betti number. A lower bound for average genus in terms of the maximum genus and some structure theorems for graphs with a given average genus are also provided.

A tableau inversion is a pair of entries in row-standard tableau $T$ that lie in the same column of $T$ yet lack the appropriate relative ordering to make $T$ column-standard.  An $i$-inverted Young tableau is a row-standard tableau along with precisely $i$ inversion pairs. Tableau inversions were originally introduced by Fresse to calculate the Betti numbers of Springer fibers in Type A, with the number of $i$-inverted tableaux that standardize to a fixed standard Young tableau corresponding to a specific Betti number of the associated fiber. In this paper we approach the topic of tableau inversions from a completely combinatorial perspective. We develop formulas enumerating the number of $i$-inverted Young tableaux for a variety of tableaux shapes, not restricting ourselves to inverted tableau that standardize a specific standard Young tableau, and construct bijections between $i$-inverted Young tableaux of a certain shape with $j$-inverted Young tableaux of different shapes. Finally, we share some the results of a computer program developed to calculate tableaux inversions.

Taubes proved that the Casson invariant of an integral homology 3-sphere equals half the Euler characteristic of its instanton Floer homology. We extend this result to all closed oriented 3-manifolds with positive first Betti number by establishing a similar relationship between the Lescop invariant of the manifold and its instanton Floer homology. The proof uses surgery techniques.

Abstract We use Young tableaux to compute the dimension of $V^r$, the Prym–Brill–Noether locus of a folded chain of loops of any gonality. This tropical result yields a new upper bound on the dimensions of algebraic Prym–Brill–Noether loci. Moreover, we prove that $V^r$ is pure dimensional and connected in codimension $1$ when $\dim V^r \geq 1$. We then compute the 1st Betti number of this locus for even gonality when the dimension is exactly $1$ and compute the cardinality when the locus is finite and the edge lengths are generic.
