Administration of Diamox by ingestion or injection to adult fasting female dogs consistently produced an acute increase of approximately 1 mg % in the plasma concentration of calcium. At the same time there was an increase in the plasma phosphate and chloride concentration and a decrease in total plasma content of carbon dioxide of Diamox-infused dogs. Diamox did not affect the plasma concentration of calcium, chloride or bicarbonate if renal excretory function was abolished prior to its administration. Infusion of Diamox produced a prompt rise in the urinary excretion of sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphate, citrate, chloride and water in fasting female dogs. The effect of Diamox on the fasting concentration of calcium rendered unsatisfactory the interpretation of data concerned with a study of its effect on the disappearance of injected calcium. However, intravenous injection of small amounts of sodium carbonate was found to produce a definite delay in the rate of disappearance of injected calcium.

Abstract. We have explored a one-step method for gravimetric preparation of CO2-in-air standards in aluminum cylinders. We consider both adsorption to stainless steel surfaces used in the transfer of highly pure CO2 and adsorption of CO2 to cylinder walls. We demonstrate that CO2-in-air standards can be prepared with relatively low uncertainty (∼ 0.04 %, ∼95 % confidence level) by introducing aliquots whose masses are known to high precision and by using well-characterized cylinders. Five gravimetric standards, prepared over the nominal range of 350 to 490 µmol mol−1 (parts per million, ppm), showed excellent internal consistency, with residuals from a linear fit equal to 0.05 ppm. This work compliments efforts to maintain the World Meteorological Organization, Global Atmosphere Watch, mole fraction scale for carbon dioxide in air, widely used for atmospheric monitoring. This gravimetric technique could be extended to other atmospheric trace gases, depending on the vapor pressure of the gas.

1. Formulae developed by Anfinsen et al. (1946) for a medium used in the cultivation of Plasmodium knowlesi were used for media in which excystation of Entamoeba histolytica without bacteria was investigated.2. The following media were used: (i) an inorganic fluid containing carbon dioxide and chlorides, phosphates, and bicarbonates, of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium; (ii) an inorganic fluid of chlorides and phosphates of the above metals without bicarbonates; (iii) the same respective fluids plus glucose, and (iv) the same plus enrichments with B vitamins, cocarboxylase, vitamin C, purines, pyrimidines, folic acid, glucosamine, cholesterol, and amino-acids. The oxygen content of all media was lowered either by cysteine or glutathione.3. Some excystation occurred in all media, the percentages were lowest in the inorganic fluid without bicarbonates, highest in fluid with bicarbonates plus all of the listed organic compounds, and intermediate in the inorganic bicarbonate fluid plus glucose. Amino-acids were not required for good percentages of excystation.4. Excystation occurred when cysts were isolated in medium with Trypanosoma cruzi.5. The data show that organic compounds in the medium are necessary for high percentages of excystation.
