Three-dimensional integrated woven spacer sandwich composites have been widely used as industrial textiles for many applications due to their superior physical and mechanical properties. In this research, 3D integrated woven spacer sandwich composites of five different specifications were produced, and the mechanical properties and performance were investigated under different load conditions. XR-CT (X-ray computed tomography) images were employed to visualize the microstructural details and analyze the fracture morphologies of fractured specimens under different load conditions. In addition, the effects of warp and weft direction, face sheet thickness, and core pile height on the mechanical properties and performance of the composite materials were analyzed. This investigation can provide significant guidance to help determine the structure of composite materials and design new products according to the required mechanical properties.

The rapid prototyping (RP) technology has advanced in various fields such as verification of design, and functional test. Recently, researchers have studied bio-materials to fabricate functional bio-RP parts. In this research, a nano composite deposition system (NCDS) was developed to fabricate three-dimensional functional parts for bio-applications. In the hybrid process, the material removal process by mechanical micro machining and/or the deposition process are combined. NCDS uses biocompatible or biodegradable polymer resin as matrix and various bioceramics to form bio-composite materials. To test drug release rate in vivo environment, two different types of drug delivery system (DDS) were fabricated using the bio-composite materials. 1) Container type DDS used poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide acid)(50:50) and 5-fluorouracil as the drug composite while polycaprolactone(PCL) served as the container of the drug. 2) Scaffold type DDS formed porous microstructure with poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide acid)(50:50) and 5-fluorouracil composite. The effect of geometry of the DDS on release rate of drug is under investigation.

Superconducting wires have been applied for the fabrication of superconducting magnets in nuclear magneto-resonance (NMR), Magneto-resonance imaging (MRI) and so on. MgB2 has the highest critical temperature of superconducting transition (TC39K) among intermetallic compound superconductive materials. This means that MgB2 Superconductive wire doesn’t need expensive liquid He for cooling. We used the original method of the three-dimensional penetration casting (3DPC) in this laboratory to fabricate the MgB2/Al composite. Our 3DPC method for fabricating composite materials can disperse particles in the matrix homogenously without any aggregation and control volume fractions of composites within the range of 4 – 40%, even when particle size is less than 1 m. Thus, these composite materials can be processed by machining, extrusion and rolling. In the composite material we made, MgB2 particles dispersed to the Al matrix uniformly. The TC was determined by electrical resistivity and magnetization to be about 37 – 39K. We succeeded in extruding MgB2/Al composite billet to 1mm wire. Microstructures of these samples have been confirmed by SEM method. MgB2/Al composite billet and extruded wire were showed there no cracks inside the materials.
