The heat sink with vertically rectangular interrupted fins was investigated numerically in a natural convection field, with steady-state heat transfer. A numerical study has been conducted using ANSYS Fluent software (R16.1) in order to develop a 3-D numerical model.  The dimensions of the fins are (305 mm length, 100 mm width, 17 mm height, and 9.5 mm space between fins. The number of fins used on the surface is eight. In this study, the heat input was used as follows: 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 watts. This study focused on interrupted rectangular fins with a different arrangement and angle of the fins. Results show that the addition of interruption in fins in various arrangements will improve the thermal performance of the heat sink, and through the results, a better interruption rate as an equation can be obtained.

The main objective of this paper is to focus on a numerical study of viscous dissipation effect on the steady state flow of MHD Williamson nanofluid. A mathematical modeled which resembles the physical flow problem has been developed. By using an appropriate transformation, we converted the system of dimensional PDEs (nonlinear) into coupled dimensionless ODEs. The numerical solution of these modeled ordinary differential equations (ODEs) is achieved by utilizing shooting technique together with Adams-Bashforth Moulton method of order four. Finally, the results of discussed for different parameters through graphs and tables.

It is usual that fuel system of an aero-engine operates within a wide range of temperatures. As a result, this can have effect on both the characteristics and precision of fuel metering unit (FMU), even on the performance and safety of the whole engine. This paper provides theoretical analysis of the effect that fluctuation of fuel temperature has on the controllability of FMU and clarifies the drawbacks of the pure mathematical models considering fuel temperature variation for FMU. Taking the electrohydraulic servovalve-controlled FMU as the numerical study, simulation in AMESim is carried out by thermal hydraulic model under the temperatures ranged from −10 to 60 °C to confirm the effectiveness and precision of the model on the basis of steady-state and dynamic characteristics of FMU. Meanwhile, the FMU testing workbench with temperature adjustment device employing the fuel cooler and heater is established to conduct an experiment of the fuel temperature characteristics. Results show that the experiment matches well with the simulation with a relative error no more than 5% and that 0–50 °C fuel temperature variation produces up to 5.2% decrease in fuel rate. In addition, step response increases with the fuel temperature. Fuel temperature has no virtual impact on the steady-state and dynamic characteristics of FMU under the testing condition in this paper, implying that FMU can operate normally in the given temperature range.

The sedimentation of fibre suspensions at low Reynolds number is studied using two different, but complementary, numerical simulation methods: (1) Monte Carlo simulations, which consider interparticle hydrodynamic interactions at all orders within the slender-body theory approximation (Mackaplow & Shaqfeh 1996), and (ii) dynamic simulations, which consider point–particle interactions and are accurate for suspension concentrations of nl3=1, where n and l are the number density and characteristic half-length of the fibres, respectively. For homogeneous, isotropic suspensions, the Monte Carlo simulations show that the hindrance of the mean sedimentation speed is linear in particle concentration up to at least nl3=7. The speed is well predicted by a new dilute theory that includes the effect of two-body interactions. Our dynamic simulations of dilute suspensions, however, show that interfibre hydrodynamic interactions cause the spatial and orientational distributions to become inhomogeneous and anisotropic. Most of the fibres migrate into narrow streamers aligned in the direction of gravity. This drives a downward convective flow within the streamers which serves to increase the mean fibre sedimentation speed. A steady-state orientation distribution develops which strongly favours fibre alignment with gravity. Although the distribution reaches a steady state, individual fibres continue to rotate in a manner that can be qualitatively described as a flipping between the two orientations aligned with gravity. The simulation results are in good agreement with published experimental data.

AbstractThe existence of supergradient wind in the interior of the boundary layer is a distinct feature of a tropical cyclone (TC). Although the vertical advection is shown to enhance supergradient wind in TC boundary layer (TCBL), how and to what extent the strength and structure of supergradient wind are modulated by vertical advection are not well understood. In this study, both a TCBL model and an axisymmetric full-physics model are used to quantify the contribution of vertical advection process to the strength and vertical structure of supergradient wind in TCBL. Results from the TCBL model show that the removal of vertical advection of radial wind reduces both the strength and height of supergradient wind by slightly more than 50%. The removal of vertical advection of agradient wind reduces the height of the supergradient wind core by ~30% but increases the strength of supergradient wind by ~10%. Results from the full-physics model show that the removal of vertical advection of radial wind or agradient wind reduces both the strength and height of supergradient wind but the removal of that of radial wind produces a more substantial reduction (52%) than the removal of that of agradient wind (35%). However, both the intensification rate and final intensity of the simulated TCs in terms of maximum 10-m wind speed show little differences in experiments with and without the vertical advection of radial or agradient wind, suggesting that supergradient wind contributes little to either the intensification rate or the steady-state intensity of the simulated TC.

A pair of governing differential equations form the basis for the study of steady-state forced vibration of a sandwich beam with longitudinal nonuniformity in the stiffness and mass of the middle layer. The spatial solution for simply supported boundary conditions is obtained by a Fourier analysis of both material and kinematic variations. The solution is utilized in the numerical study of a sandwich beam with a segmented configuration of elastic and viscoelastic core materials. The results exemplify a tuned configuration of core segments for optimum damping of the first resonant mode.

A quantitative description of the violation of the second law of thermodynamics in relatively small classical systems and over short time scales comes from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. It has been well established both theoretically and experimentally, the validity of the fluctuation theorem to small scale systems that are disturbed from their initial equilibrium states. Some experimental studies in the past have also explored the validity of the fluctuation theorem to nonequilibrium steady states at long time scales in the asymptotic limit. To this end, a theoretical and/or purely numerical model of the integral fluctuation theorem has been presented. An approximate general expression for the dissipation function has been derived for accelerated colloidal systems trapped/confined in power-law traps. Thereafter, a colloidal particle trapped in a harmonic potential (generated by an accelerating one-dimensional optical trap) and undergoing Brownian motion has been considered for the numerical study. A toy model of a quartic potential trap in addition to the harmonic trap has also been considered for the numerical study. The results presented herein show that the integral fluctuation theorem applies not only to equilibrium steady state distributions but also to nonequilibrium steady state distributions of colloidal systems in accelerated frames of reference over long time scales.

We present a numerical study of transient natural convection in a rectangular open thermosyphon having asymmetric thermal boundary conditions. One vertical wall of the thermosyphon is either heated by constant heat flux (“warmup”) or cooled by convection to the surroundings (“cooldown”). The top of the thermosyphon is open to a large reservoir of fluid at constant temperature. The vorticity, energy, and stream-function equations are solved by finite differences on graded mesh. The ADI method and iteration with overrelaxation are used. We find that the thermosyphon performs quite differently during cooldown compared with warmup. In cooldown, flows are mainly confined to the thermosyphon with little momentum and heat exchange with the reservoir. For warmup, the circulation resembles that for a symmetrically heated thermosyphon where there is a large exchange with the reservoir. The difference is explained by the temperature distributions. For cooldown, the fluid becomes stratified and the resulting stability reduces motion. In contrast, the transient temperature for warmup does not become stratified but generally exhibits the behavior of a uniformly heated vertical plate. For cooldown and Ra > 104, time-dependent heat transfer is predicted by a closed-form expression for one-dimensional conduction, which shows that Nu → Bi1/2/A in the steady-state limit. For warmup, transient heat transfer behaves as one-dimensional conduction for early times and at steady state and for Ra* ≥ 105, can be approximated as that for a uniformly heated vertical plate.
