Digital-based teaching media possess very high production quality capable of showcasing complex ideas in a short period of time. Later, the digital-based teaching media is well developed in millennial era indicating by the productivity escalation of it. This study aim at investigating (1) the trending application resorted by the teaching media designers to create the digital-based teaching media; (2) the problems faced by millennial teachers in creating the digital-based teaching media; (3) the underlying factors of the problems; (4) the efforts of digital teaching media designers to overcome the problems. Using descriptive qualitative, the 129 digital teaching media designers (millennial teachers) within 22-37 years old were investigated about the process and the product of digital-based teaching media. Questionnaire, interview, and document analysis used to assemble the data. The data were analyzed using the Interactive Model of data analysis. Triangulation technique facilitated the data validation and verification later. The result of the research shows that (1) the there are trending applications resorted by designer to create the digital teaching media such as prezi, movie maker and kine toon; (2) Less creativity and understanding towards technology become the major problems; (3) The lack of knowledge in technology and the dependency to make use the ready-made digital teaching media be the prominent factors causing the problem in designing digital teaching media; (4) Enhancing the creativity, innovation and technology sensitivity is the top solution proposed by teachers. The research implies that being the digital teaching media developers need extra efforts. Moreover, improving the technology sensitivity towards the current technology for teaching assists the designer better.

At Play in the Cosmos is a game for University-level Astronomy courses. Designed as a collaboration between the Games + Learning + Society Center, an academic center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Norton & Company, Cosmos is intended to support a “game-first” model of curriculum in which students play the game before engaging in other activities. Cosmos includes about 4 hours of game play and spans the entirety of course. It includes over 25 embedded simulations that are also used for homework, lectures, and demonstrations. The design process and resulting artifact was colored by institutional constraints, specifically a lengthy pre-production that demanded extensive documentation. The subsequent development process followed a relatively linear, waterfall process and resulted in linear game. Designers attempted to mediate this linearity through a crafting system that enabled players to explore the Universe and mine celestial bodies for resources. As a game intended to compete in the market, Cosmos included a relatively high production quality led by a team experienced in AAA development processes, and the chapter focuses on the development of art styles, interfaces, and fitting voice overs in on a constrained budget and timeline.

In this paper we present the design and implementation of a parallel kinematics based reconfigurable machine. The machine utilizes a Tripod based module with 3 degrees-of-freedom combined with a linear X-Y stage and gantry system for 5-axis machining. The tripod module uses a unique passive link mechanism with constant length leg actuators. This architecture offers good stiffness and high accuracy. The gantry system itself is reconfigurable, allowing for changing the working characteristics of the machine. The control system is based on open architecture principles. Corresponding to the mechanical reconfiguration, the control system also needs to be reconfigured to reflect the actual state of the machine. Mechanical reconfiguration also brings with it the need to verify the accuracy of the new configuration. Also discussed in the paper is the calibration methodology that ensures high production quality in each configured mode of the machine.

To address the high cost of textbooks, Rice University’s Connexions and the Community College Open Textbook Project (CCOTP) collaborated to develop a proof-of-concept free and open textbook. The proof-of-concept served to document a workflow process that would support adoption of open textbooks. Open textbooks provide faculty and students with a low cost alternative to traditional publishers’ textbooks and can help to make higher education more affordable. Connexions provides a publishing platform for open textbook projects. The CCOTP acted as a liaison between community college faculty, open textbook authors, and Connexions. Challenges to the production and adoption of open textbooks include 1) faculty members’ and students’ expectations of high production quality and ancillaries for open textbooks, 2) methods for documenting and maintaining control over various versions, and 3) the process of converting existing open content to digital and accessible formats. Connexions holds promise as a means to overcome these challenges. Connexions identified lessons learned about open textbook production, such as the importance of a style guide, the advantage of assembly-line workflow, and the importance of naming conventions and standard math authoring tools, Connexions also identified lessons learned about open textbook use by students and faculty, e.g., the value of availability and customizability, the importance of interactivity, the difference in how faculty and students view modularity, and the importance of textbook reading navigational aids. The authors note that the CCOTP recommends using Connexions as the common repository for open textbook content in an effort to provide greater national and international access.
