The Impact

AbstractRZ Cas is an Algol-type eclipsing binary system where the primary component was recently discovered as a δ Set pulsator. A three-continent multisite photometric campaign was carried out during 1999. Preliminary results are reported here indicating a semi-detached system where the secondary fills its Roche lobe. The light curves also suggest a hot spot on the surface of the primary component as a consequence of the impact of the mass stream from the secondary. The pulsational behaviour can be well described with only one frequency.

The eclipsing binary U Cephei has proven to be of great interest in the study of stellar evolution in close binary systems. Batten (1974), Hall and Walter (1974), Rhombs and Fix (1976), Markworth (1977), and Olson (1978), among others, have recently reported on their intensive ground based studies of U Cephei. Kondo, McCluskey and Wu (1978) have investigated the ultraviolet light curves of U Cephei obtained with Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS). Kondo, McCluskey and Stencel (1979) have discussed the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra of U Cephei. This paper discusses results incorporating additional IUE high resolution spectra of U Cephei obtained in both far-ultraviolet and mid-ultraviolet spectral regions.

The multicolour CCD light curves of the eclipsing binary systems CRTS J213033.6+213159 and 1SWASP J212454.61+203030.8 are presented for the first time, the observations are analyzed using the latest version of the WilsonDevinney code. Both the systems are found to be W UMa contact binaries belonging two different subtypes. All the light curves show the inverse O'Connell effect. By using our 2 times of minimum light for both the systems and the 187 and 105 ToMs extract from the SWASP observations, respectively for CRTS J213033.6+213159 and for 1SWASP J212454.61+203030.8, the orbital periods are here revised. The spectral type K of the systems and their short orbital periods (< 0.3 days), suggests that they are near the shortest period limit. The absolute dimensions are estimated and, from statistical diagrams, it is found that both components of the systems follow the general pattern of the relative subtype of W Ursae Majoris systems.

AbstractWe present new photometric observations of two eclipsing binary systems, V1241 Tau and GQ Dra. We use the following methodology: initially, the Wilson-Devinney code is applied to the light curves in order to determine the photometric elements of the systems. Then, the residuals are analysed using Fourier techniques. The results are the following. One frequency can be possibly attributed to a real light variation of V1241 Tau, while there is no evidence of pulsations in the light curve of GQ Dra.

Abstract We present the first evidence for the binarity of four targets in the TESS field. The temperatures are estimated by SED analysis and the orbital periods are determined. The TESS light curves of the systems are analyzed and the orbital and the absolute parameters are derived. The targets are also compared to well-studied binary systems with the same morphological type and their evolutionary states are discussed. Our results indicate that the stars belong to the class of eclipsing detached binary systems.

AbstractEclipsing binary systems potentially allow the direct and precise determination of the important properties of their component stars. An eclipsing binary containing a Cepheid variable which is also a double-lined spectroscopic binary would allow, for the first time, the direct measurement of the absolute luminosity and mass of the Cepheid. The MACHO Project LMC database contains five systems whose light curves show variations due to both eclipses and pulsation but only one has been clearly identified as an intermediate-mass, Population I object. This object, MACHO 81.8997.87 (= OGLELMC_SC16 119952) is a 2.035-d overtone Cepheid in an 800.4-d binary system with an M-type companion. Here we present the results of the analysis of the light curve of this system, the implications for its evolutionary history and discuss the prospects for future observations.

AbstractThis study inspects the influence of various effects and free parameters of the accretion disc and circumstellar material on the emerging light curve of eclipsing binary systems that have a circumstellar disc, by using the SHELLSPEC code. The results indicate that some of the parameters, namely the temperature and inclination of the disc, spot, jet, stream and shell, significantly affect on the emerging light curve, while some other parameters, namely the exponent of the power-law behavior of the density of the disc, microturbulence, inner and outer radius of the disc, do not noticeably affect on the emerging light curve. An application to the Algol-type eclipsing binary system AV Del and an accretion disc model for the system using the SHELLSPEC code is included.
