In this paper, the effect of the outlet surface area of the spiral casing on the performance of a centrifugal fan was investigated using open source CFD software OpenFOAM [1]. An automized loop with RANS and data post-processing is set up using Matlab, for allowing a large number of parameter variations. The effect was analyzed as a function of total pressure loss and static pressure recovery coefficient and on total efficiency as well.

Biopolymers are a promising alternative to petroleum-based plastic raw materials. They are bio-based, non-toxic and degradable under environmental conditions. In addition to the homopolymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), there are a number of co-polymers that have a broad range of applications and are easier to process in comparison to PHB. The most prominent representative from this group of bio-copolymers is poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV). In this article, we show a new kinetic model that describes the PHBV production from fructose and propionic acid in Cupriavidus necator (C. necator). The developed model is used to analyze the effects of process parameter variations such as the CO2 amount in the exhaust gas and the feed rate. The presented model is a valuable tool to improve the microbial PHBV production process. Due to the coupling of CO2 online measurements in the exhaust gas to the biomass production, the model has the potential to predict the composition and the current yield of PHBV in the ongoing process.

Besides polyamide 11 (PA 11) outstanding properties, wear performance is considered a key factor for its continued widespread use. TiTanate NanoTubes (TTNT) have a huge potential as reinforcement in polymer matrix nanocomposites, and although nanotubes reinforcement capacity is well understood, its effect on tribological characteristics is still an open question. Thus, the present work has as objective to study the wear behavior of PA 11 and its nanocomposites, highlighting TTNT loading, functionalization and sodium content effects. Seeking the possibility to tailor properties, surface topography is investigated. Based on parameter classification, correlation and functional sense, an ideal roughness parameter set is defined. By taking measurements in X- and Y-axis, parameter variations and sensibility are also analyzed. From the results, maximum wear resistance can be reached in functionalized samples with low TTNT loading and high sodium content. Some roughness parameters demonstrate a moderate to strong correlation with wear performance. Parameter variations are mainly attributed to the non-stationarity of the surface.

Test parameter variations were evaluated for their effects on surotomycin MICs. Calcium concentration was the only variable that influenced MICs; therefore, 50 μg/ml (standard for lipopeptide testing) is recommended. Quality control ranges forClostridium difficile(0.12 to 1 μg/ml) andEggerthella lenta(broth, 1 to 4 μg/ml; agar, 1 to 8 μg/ml) were approved by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute based on these data.

The One

A new model-free approach to precisely control humanoid robot joints is presented in this article. An input–output online identification procedure will permit to compensate neglected or uncertain dynamics, such as, on the one hand, transmission and compliance nonlinear effects, and, on the other hand, network transmission delays. Robustness to parameter variations will be analyzed and compared to other advanced PID-based controllers. Simulations will show that not only good tracking quality can be obtained with this novel technique, but also that it provides a very robust behavior to the closed-loop system. Furthermore, a locomotion task will be tested in a complete humanoid simulator to highlight the suitability of this control approach for such complex systems.
