Vinte e duas linhagens de trigo foram comparadas com cultivares comerciais, em ensaios instalados em diferentes localidades paulistas em 1983, 1984 e 1985, analisando-se os parâmetros seguintes: rendimento de grãos, altura de plantas, ciclo em dias da emergência ao florescimento e da emergência à maturação, notas de acamamento, comprimento da espiga, número de grãos por espiga e por espigueta, número de espiguetas por espiga, peso de cem grãos, resistência aos agentes causais de oídio e doenças das folhas em condição de campo; resistência aos agentes causais das ferrugens do colmo e da folha em campo e em casa de vegetação. Em laboratório, foram realizados estudos da tolerância ao alumínio, em soluções nutritivas. Em relação à produção de grãos, destacaram-se as linhagens IAC-103, IAC-104, IAC-107, IAC-167 e PAT 73121, que não diferiram dos cultivares controles (BH-1146, IAC-18 e Alondra S-46). As linhagens IAC-104, IAC-107, IAC-111, IAC-167, ISWYN-31/82 e Kenya Kifaru mostraram plantas de porte semi-anão. As linhagens IAC-108 e ISWYN-31/82 destacaram-se quanto à resistência ao agente causal de oídio; IAC-110 e IAC-111, quanto à menor ocorrência de doenças nas folhas; IAC-100, IAC-101, IAC-111, IAC-167 e PAT 73121, quanto à resistência ao agente causal da ferrugem-da-folha em condição de campo; IAC-104, IAC-108, IAC-110, IAC-111, IAC-167, ISWYN-31/82 e Kenya Kifaru, quanto à resistência ao agente causal da ferrugem-do-colmo, em campo. A linhagem IAC-167 e o cultivar Alondra S-46 foram resistentes a oito raças de Puccinia graminis tritici, agente da ferrugem-do-colmo, em casa de vegetação, e IAC-103 e Kenya Kifaru foram resistentes a sete raças. A IAC-167 foi resistente a três raças de Puccinia recondita, agente da ferrugem-da-folha, em casa de vegetação. As linhagens IAC-99 e IAC-109 foram tão tolerantes à toxicidade de alumínio quanto os cultivares BH-1146 e IAC-18, sendo IAC-100, IAC-106, IAC-167 e ISWYN-31 /82, as mais sensíveis.

Avaliaram-se os cultivares de trigo IAC 120 (Curumi), IAC 286 (Takaoka) e IAC 289 (Marruá) quanto à produtividade, às reações aos agentes causais das ferrugens do colmo e da folha (em condição de campo e de casa de vegetação) e à helmintosporiose, em experimentos instalados em solos corrigidos e não corrigidos em relação à acidez, em condição de sequeiro ou de irrigação por aspersão, em diferentes regiões paulistas em 1988-92. Avaliaram-se também os cultivares por testes de tolerância a ferro, alumínio e manganês, empregando-se soluções nutritivas, em laboratório, além das qualidades físicas de panificação das farinhas obtidas dos seus grãos e o teste final de panificação. A produtividade de grãos do IAC 120 superou a do BH 1146 e do IAC 24 (controle) em 19 e 14% respectivamente, nas condições de sequeiro. O IAC 289, nas mesmas condições de cultivo, apresentou produção de grãos 26 e 19% maior em relação às testemunhas Anahuac e IAC 24 e, em condição de irrigação, foi superior 13 e 9% em relação aos mesmos controles. O IAC 286 produziu 12 e 15% a mais que o Anahuac e o IAC 24 em condições de irrigação. Para a ferrugem do colmo (Puccinia graminis tritici), em casa de vegetação, o IAC 120 demonstrou suscetibilidade às raças G11, G19, G20 e G21; o IAC 286 apresentou resistência somente às raças G11 e G17; o BH 1146 mostrou-se sensível e o IAC 289 e o Anahuac, resistentes, a todas as raças testadas. Os testes para reação à ferrugem da folha (Puccinia recondita) em casa de vegetação demonstraram que os cultivares IAC 120, IAC 286, IAC 289, BH 1146 e Anahuac foram suscetíveis a essa doença, resultados esses confirmados nos testes de campo. Todos os cultivares em estudo se apresentaram sensíveis ao agente causal da helmintosporiose, com exceção do IAC 120, que revelou resistência maior em relação aos demais; o IAC 120 mostrou-se tolerante a Al3+ e Mn 2+ e sensível a Fe 2+; o IAC 286 foi tolerante a altas doses de Al3+ e sensível a Mn2+ e Fe 2+; o IAC 289 demonstrou-se tolerante a Fe 2+ e Mn2+, e sensível a Al3+. Nos testes de panificação, os novos cultivares revelaram qualidade satisfatória: o IAC 120 apresentou farinha de glúten médio a forte, e o IAC 286 e IAC 289, farinha de glúten médio.

Dispersal of a new virulence of Puccinia graminis tritici (Pgt)-Ug99 from Uganda-Kenya to Yemen, over >1000 km, happened in four years. Geo-agro-ecology of wheat cultivation and the epidemiology of Pgt indicate that the Rift Valley is a natural conduit “flyway.” The widely prevalent “green bridges” favor survival and spread of Pgt. This part of the Rift Valley is one single epidemiological zone, and the annual Pgt build-up is from the endogenous inoculum. Accepted for publication 18 October 2012. Published 14 November 2012.

The control of wheat leaf rust (Puccinia recondita tritici) by seed or foliar applications of 4-n-butyl-l,2,4-triazole (RH-124) has been examined in field experiments over three years at Gatton, Queensland. Single foliar sprays of RH-124 at rates as low as 100 g a.i, ha-1 have given excellent control of leaf rust. One such spray resulted in a yield increase of 30 per cent. A spray at 400 g a.i. ha-1 increased yield by 46 per cent compared with an increase of 61 per cent in the rust-free reference. Applications around the early boot stage of crop development were the most effective. Treatment of seed with RH-124 resulted in some control of leaf rust in one season with an associated yield increase of 22 per cent. Although RH-124 appears promising, additional studies are required before use of the fungicide on commercial wheat crops would be accepted.

Urediniospores of Puccinia graminis tritici, form 21, were sown on buffer solutions covering the range from pH 3 to pH 8. Maximum germination was obtained between pH 5.8 and 6.5, with indications that if the point of maximum germination could be determined with precision it would be found to lie in the neighborhood of pH 6.2.The effect of buffered and unbuffered solutions of pure phenolic compounds on the germination of urediniospores was studied. Greater inhibition was obtained with unbuffered solutions owing to the additional effect of hydrogen ion concentration. In buffered solutions, at pH 6.0, germination was prevented by 45 p.p.m. of hydroquinone, 125 of o-cresol, 180 of anisic acid, 250 of benzoic acid, 340 of catechol, 400 of guaiacol and 600 of phenol. A number of other compounds were also studied. The inhibitory effects of compounds, of which the bactericidal effects are known, are fairly closely related to their bactericidal efficiency.Investigations were made of the inhibitory effects on spore germination and the growth of germ tubes, of aqueous dilutions of 15, 10, 5 and 2.5% of the press-juice of Vernal, Khapli, Marquis and Little Club wheats. Statistical treatment of the data accumulated in ten series of determinations, in which a total of 160,000 spores was counted, showed that significant differences occurred between varieties and that variations in the total solid content and hydrogen ion concentration of the press-juice had no consistent effect upon the results. Although the results were not entirely clear-cut, it is concluded that the varieties fall in the following order with respect to increasing inhibitory effect of their extracts: Vernal, Marquis, Khapli and Little Club. Since Vernal and Khapli are resistant to form 21 whereas Marquis and Little Club are susceptible, the results fail to show any relationship between the effects of host extracts on the germination of urediniospores, or on the growth of germ tubes, and the rust resistance of the variety.
