AbstractTwo new species are described: .Megalospora occidentalis Kantvilas from Western Australia, with solitary muriform ascospores; M. pulverata Kantvilas from Tasmania, with typically two-spored asci and bicellular ascospores. The new combination M. melanodermia var. galactocarpa (Zahlbr.) Kantvilas is proposed. Megalospora taylori Dodge, described from Tasmania, is a synonym of M. gompholoma subsp. fuscolineata Sipman. New records are reported for Megaloblastenia flavidoatra(Nyl.) Sipman (from Tasmania), .Megalospora disjuncta Sipman (from New South Wales and Queensland), and M. subtuberculosa (Knight) Sipman (from New South Wales). Additional data for Austroblastenia pupa Sipman, M. gompholomasubsp. fuscolineata Sipman and M. lopadioides Sipman, and a key for the family in Australia are presented. M. disjuncta Sipman is lectotypified. Biogeographical and ecological patterns are discussed briefly.

The discovery of a new genus of Heatherellidae in New Zealand has led us to revise this enigmatic family and its constituent genera. Aheatherella n. gen., based on A. mira n. sp. from the North Island of New Zealand, lacks some of the derived character states that link the Australian Heatherella, most notably the lack of sexual dimorphism in the dorsal shields and in the presence of peritremes in adult Aheatherella. Heatherella osleri n. sp. is described from New South Wales, extending the distribution of this genus beyond Queensland. New collection records of H. callimaulos and a key to the genera and species of the family are provided. We propose that the Heatherellidae—previously placed in its own cohort outside the Gamasina—are best considered a superfamily of gamasine mites within the subcohort Epicriiae.

Three new species of janirid isopods are described: Carpias montaguensis sp. nov., Ianiropsis alanmillari sp. nov. and Janaira platyoura sp. nov.; all three were collected in shallow waters of southern New South Wales, Australia. Our report represents new records for these genera in Australian waters. Janaira platyoura sp. nov. is the second species added to this genus, so a revision of generic diagnosis was required. The diagnostic features of Carpias and Ianiropsis are also discussed and a new combination for the species Ianiropsis varians Winkler & Brandt, 1993 is proposed. Keys to the species of Carpias and Ianiropsis are presented.

The genus Agrotera Schrank, 1802 is revised for Australia and the generic definition is refined based on the male genitalia. The genera Leucinodella Strand, 1918 stat. rev. with L. leucostola (Hampson, 1896) comb. nov., Nistra Walker, 1859 stat. rev. with N. coelatalis Walker, 1859 comb. rev., Sagariphora Meyrick, 1894 stat. rev. with S. magnificalis (Hampson, 1893) comb. nov., and Tetracona Meyrick, 1884 stat. rev. with T. amathealis (Walker, 1859) comb. rev. and T. pictalis Warren, 1896 comb. rev. are removed from synonymy with Agrotera, as they lack the synapomorphies of Agrotera. Two new species, Agrotera genuflexa sp. nov. from Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales, and A. longitabulata sp. nov. from Queensland, are described. The taxonomic status of the Australian species of Agrotera is discussed, and a key to all species, based on males, is provided. The adults and genitalia of the new species and some related species are figured.

Chitinozoa have been recovered from three sections within the Garra Limestone in central New South Wales, Australia. A total of 31 species are identified and two new species, Angochitina hypenetes and Bursachitina mawsonae, are described. Three stratigraphically distinct assemblages from the late Lochkovian to the early Pragian are distinguished and compared with faunas of a similar age from Europe and northern Africa.

Paragalaxias dissimilis (Regan), which has not been reported since description from 'New South Wales' in 1905, is shown to be a senior synonym of P. shannonensis Scott, 1935, from Great Lake, Tasmania. Two new species of Parugalaxias, one from Great Lake and another from Arthurs Lake nearby, are described.

Two new species of Achilini from eastern Australia are described and keys to the genera of Achilini in Australia, and species of the genus Anabunda, are provided. In addition, the type species of Anabunda is redescribed and the recorded distribution extended. The new species are Anabunda murrayfletcheri sp. nov. from Queensland, and A. minuta sp. nov. from New South Wales and Queensland. Both represent short-range endemic species, possibly under threat because of rapid urbanisation within their ranges. Biogeography and plant associations are discussed briefly.

Two new species of kalliapseudid tanaidacea from Australia, Kalliapseudes longisetosus and Kalliapseudes messingi, are described from marine waters off Sydney, New South Wales and the Northwest continental shelf, respectively. Kalliapseudes longisetosus is distinguished from the other congeners by the presence of a single, very long simple seta on the anterior corners of the pereonites (about as long as the first pereonite) and several very long simple setae on the basis of the second and third pereopods (about as long as the basis). This new species is the second member of the genus to be reported from New South Wales. Kalliapseudes messingi is distinguished by having two small setae medially on the dactylus of pereopods 4 and 5, by the female having a tuft of sensory setae subterminally on the dactylus of pereopod 6, and by having three plumose setae on both the cheliped and pereopod 1 exopodite and is the first member of the genus to be reported from the Northwest continental shelf of Australia. Both species have a needle-like tip on the dactylus of the second and third pereopods. A table giving the distribution data for the species of Kalliapseudes and a key to the genera and species of Kalliapseudidae now known from Australia are presented.

Two new epigean species of the cixiid genus Solonaima Kirkaldy, which is endemic in eastern Australia, are described from Queensland (Lamington National Park) and New South Wales (Rosebank): S. nielseni n. sp. and S. monteithia n.sp.

Four new species of the family Thanerocleridae are described from Australia (Queensland, New South Wales): Isoclerus (Isoclerus) rumcajs, I. (I.) manka, I. (I.) cipisek and I. (I.) gerstmeieri. These species are the first records of the family’s autochthonous members from the Australian continent. The subgenus Isoclerus (Lyctosoma) Lewis is synonymised with Isoclerus (Isoclerus) Lewis. Hypotheses concerning the biogeography of subtribe Isoclerina Kolibáÿč in which the newly described species belong, are proposed. The ancestral area of Isoclerina may be in Africa or somewhere in the region of Europe, Greenland and the eastern part of North America – in either case, in the Lower to Middle Cretaceous era. Also, pan-biogeographic hypotheses are formulated for the distribution patterns of species of the subgenus Isoclerus.
