Information concerning the presence of stink bugs in blackberry (Rubus spp.) in Brazil is sparse. This study aimed to identify the stink bug species associated with blackberry, to establish the daily dynamics and evaluate the fruits damage. The experiment was conducted in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, in blackberry orchard. Presence and evaluations of stink bugs were done weekly through visual and sweeping samplings at different day times. Five species of pentatomids were identified: Piezodorus guildinii, Nezara viridula, Euschistus heros, Dichelops furcatus and Edessa meditabunda. The bugs attack the drupelets producing a dark brown spot and wrinkled berries.

O comportamento de trinta e cinco genótipos de soja foi estudado em condições de campo, em Campinas, SP, em relação ao ataque dos percevejos pentatomídeos Euschistus heros (F.), Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) e Nezara viridula (L.). A infestação natural do campo experimental foi suplementada com a liberação de percevejos adultos. Em 1983/1984, o dano médio sofrido pelos genótipos foi moderado e, em 1984/1985, severo. Três critérios foram utilizados para avaliar a resistência das variedades: a porcentagem de área foliar retida após a maturação das vagens, o índice porcentual de dano de vagem e a produção de grãos. A testemunha suscetível usada foi o cultivar Paraná, que produziu apenas 402kg/ha e 31kg/ha em 1983/ 1984 e 1984/ 1985 respectivamente. A linhagem IAC 80/4228 apresentou uma resistência estável, tendo produzido 1.675kg/ha e 1.639kg/ha em 1983/1984 e 1984/1985 respectivamente.

O potencial reprodutivo e a longevidade do parasitóide de ovos Telenomus podisi Ashmead foram estudados, em laboratório, em ovos dos percevejos hospedeiros Euschistus heros (F.), Piezodorus guildinii (West.) e Nezara viridula (L.). A capacidade reprodutiva e a longevidade de fêmeas de T. podisi foram significativamente diferentes nas três espécies de percevejos. A maior produção de descendentes por fêmea ocorreu nos primeiros 10 dias de vida, em ovos de E. heros e P. guildinii. O parasitismo em N. viridula foi muito baixo (8,1%) e somente cinco indivíduos completaram seu desenvolvimento. Fêmeas jovens geraram maior número de fêmeas do que de machos, ocorrendo proporção inversa com o avanço da idade da fêmea. A razão sexual do parasitóide quando desenvolvido em E.heros e P. guildinii foi de 0,67 e 0,61 e a fertilidade média da fêmea durante a sua vida reprodutiva foi de 211,0 e 76,1 descendentes, respectivamente. A longevidade das fêmeas de T. podisi foi diferente em cada espécie hospedeira, vivendo, em média, 19,9, 30,9 e 40,6 dias quando parasitaram ovos de P. guildinii, E. heros e N. viridula, respectivamente. Os machos, entretanto, tiveram sempre longevidade maior em relação às fêmeas, apresentando um tempo de vida semelhante nos três hospedeiros (32,0, 34,5 e 43,5 dias, respectivamente). Os resultados sugerem que E. heros e P. guildinii são os hospedeiros mais adequados ao desenvolvimento de T. podisi.

Background: Herbivorous insects are one of the main biological threats to crops. One such group of insects, stink bugs, do not eat large amounts of tissue when feeding on soybean, but are damaging to the quality of the seed yield as they feed on green developing seeds leading to poorly marketable harvests. In addition to causing physical damage during sucking-feeding activities, the insects can also transmit microbial pathogens, leading to even greater yield loss. Conducting surveys of the insect intestinal microbiome can help identify possible pathogens, as well as detail what healthy stink bug digestive systems have in common.Methods: We used the conserved V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene to characterize the bacterial microbiome of the red-banded stink bug Piezodorus guildinii collected in Brazil and the United States, as well as the neotropical brown stink bug Euschistus heros collected in Brazil.Results: After quality filtering of the data, 192 samples were kept for analyses: 117 samples from P. guildinii covering three sites in Brazil and four sites in the United States, and 75 samples for E. heros covering 10 sites in Brazil. The most interesting observations were that the diversity and abundance of some bacterial families were different in the different ecoregions of Brazil and the United States.Conclusion: Some families, such as Acetobacteraceae, Bacillaceae, Moraxellaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, and Rhodocyclaceae, may be related to the better adaptation in some localities in providing nutrients, break down cellulose, detoxify phytochemicals, and degrade organic compounds, which makes it difficult to control these species.

ABSTRACT Weeds compete with crops for essential inputs, but they are also important hosts for pests, both during the crop and between crops. Hairy fleabane (Conyza bonariensis) is an important weed growing in both summer and winter crops. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and population fluctuations of soybean pests using hairy fleabane as an alternative host. Samples of hairy fleabane plants were collected fortnightly over twelve months at two sites (Boa Vista do Incra and São Vicente do Sul) in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The results showed that hairy fleabane plants provided shelter to important soybean pests, including the pentatomid stink bugs Edessa meditabunda, Piezodorus guildinii, Dichelop sp. and Euschistus heros, especially after soybean maturation, and also served as an alternative food source. This weedy species was also an important alternative host for caterpillars such as Anticarsia gemmatalis, Chrysodeixis includens, Spodoptera spp. and Helicoverpa gelotopoeon.

Psix striaticeps (Dodd) is an egg-parasitoid wasp previously known only from the Old World. We report this species from twelve counties in Florida, which are the first records in the Western Hemisphere. It was collected in yellow cylinder traps and reared from the eggs of three stink bug species: Nezara viridula L., Chinavia marginata (Palisot de Beauvois), and Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood). A COI barcode analysis found a 100% match between the Floridian population and a specimen from South Africa. The prospects of using Ps. striaticeps as a biological control agent against exotic stink bugs are discussed.

Com o objetivo de conseguir material com resistência a percevejos, efetuaram-se cruzamentos entre a linhagem resistente IAC 73/228 e os cultivares Paraná, Bossier, Santa Rosa, UFV-1 e IAC-7. Para o processo de melhoramento, adotou-se o método genealógico com modificaçoes, sendo as linhas obtidas cultivadas em campo a partir de novembro e efetuado avanço de geração em casa de vegetação, a partir de junho. Foram feitas infestações artificiais de Nezara viridula (L.) em casa de vegetação e de Euschistus heros (Fabr.), Piezodorus guildinii (West.) e N. viridula em campo, todos coletados em lavouras de soja. Os critérios de seleção utilizados foram: a) alto número de vagens cheias no topo; b) ausência de retenção foliar; c) inserção alta das primeiras vagens; d) porte ereto da planta; e) produção superior à do cultivar Paraná em presença de insetos e f) sementes claras e lisas. Entre as linhagens selecionadas, destacou-se a IAC 80/596-2, de ciclo médio, descendente de IAC 73/ 228 x 'UFV-1', a qual apresentou teor satisfatório de óleo, ausência de retenção foliar mesmo sob severas infestações de percevejos, porte ereto e produção significativamente superior ao 'Paraná'. Verificou-se que é possível a transferência da resistência de IAC 73/228 para linhagens juntamente com seleção contra as principais características desfavoráveis dessa linhagem, que são a tendência a acamamento, inserção baixa das primeiras vagens, baixo teor de óleo e ciclo longo.

Abstract The stink bug Nezara viridula is one of the most threatening pests for agriculture in North and South America, and its oral secretion may be responsible for the damage it causes in soybean (Glycine max) crop. The high level of injury to seeds caused by pentatomids is related to their feeding behavior, morphology of mouth parts, and saliva, though information on the specific composition of the oral secretion is scarce. Field studies were conducted to evaluate the biochemical damage produced by herbivory to developing soybean seeds. We measured metabolites and proteins to profile the insect saliva in order to understand the dynamics of soybean-herbivore interactions. We describe the mouth parts of N. viridula and the presence of metabolites, proteins and active enzymes in the watery saliva that could be involved in seed cell wall modification, thus triggering plant defenses against herbivory. We did not detect proteins from bacteria, yeasts, or soybean in the oral secretion after feeding. These results suggest that the digestive activity and organic compounds of watery saliva may elicit a plant self-protection response. This study adds to our understanding of stink bug saliva plasticity and its role in the struggle against soybean defenses.
