Pulmonary edema is characterized by the movement of excess fluid into the alveoli of the lungs.  Although the alterations of cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology in pregnancy may predispose patients to pulmonary edema, it is never normal and constitutes severe maternal morbidity.  The etiologies of pulmonary edema are diverse, ranging from disease processes independent of pregnancy to pathophysiology unique to the gravid state.  The causes of pulmonary edema can be broadly classified as either cardiogenic or noncardiogenic, which constitutes the first important branch point in the diagnosis and management of the disease.  The treatment of pulmonary edema in pregnancy parallels that in the nonpregnant population with an emphasis on maintaining the physiologic alterations of pregnancy through supportive care, including mechanical ventilation if needed.  In all cases of pulmonary edema, the decision to proceed with delivery to improve the maternal status should be considered within the context of the etiology and anticipated disease course, the gestational age, and the goals of care. This review contains  3 figures, 4 tables, and 60 references. Abstract Objectives SARS-CoV-2 remains a pressing issue for our obstetric community during the current pandemic. We present a case of a 22-year-old nulliparous woman 31 weeks pregnant, with significant clinical SARS-CoV-2 disease, in the setting of negative nasopharyngeal PCR testing but positive IgG antibodies. Case presentation This was a 22-year-old patient 31 weeks pregnant who presented with fever, tachycardia, and subsequently preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) and pulmonary emboli with multifocal pneumonia. The patient underwent three negative SARS-CoV-2 tests via nasopharyngeal PCR testing during her hospital stay as well as a negative workup for fever. After a cesarean section for worsening maternal status after 7 days of hospitalization, the patient was admitted for worsening clinical status to the SICU. At the time of SICU admission patient was found to have serum IgG positive antibodies and was managed with intubation, antibiotics, and anticoagulation. Patient eventually left hospital against medical advice on hospital day 16 on oral antibiotics but was found to be recovering well at later outpatient follow up. Conclusions Diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 remains a complicated picture in the setting of testing limitations. This case highlights an antepartum clinical presentation of severe SARS-CoV-2 and recommends a high clinical suspicion for diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 and initiation of treatment in the pregnant population, even in the presence of negative nasopharyngeal PCR testing.

This chapter critiques the ways in which penal arrangements remain prisoner-centric and fail to acknowledge a women's maternal status and familial responsibilities. Viewing these women in isolation from their maternal status fails to recognise how they are embedded in social and familial networks, relationships, and responsibilities, and generally perform a primary caregiving role to their dependent children. Not only does this have implications for female prisoners as they attempt to remain connected to motherhood, but it also has a substantial effect on the large number of innocent children and family members left behind during maternal imprisonment. Prisoners' children have been called the ‘hidden victims of imprisonment’ and the ‘orphans of justice’ because they, and their family members, are continually disregarded within the political and policy sphere, academic studies, and society more generally.

Stone’s sheep ( Ovis dalli stonei Allen, 1897) in northern British Columbia segregate sexually during most of the year, and intrasexually between maternal and nonmaternal females during spring and early summer. Our objective was to quantify intrasexual habitat use of female Stone’s sheep relative to maternal status using measures of behaviour and habitat use. We reviewed three hypotheses of intersexual segregation (predation-risk, forage-selection, and activity-budget hypotheses) to determine if they also explained intrasexual segregation of female Stone’s sheep. Female Stone’s sheep spent the majority of their active time foraging. Nursery groups spent shorter durations of time active, more time active in solid rock escape features, and less time active in shrub habitat than nonmaternal groups. The best predictive model describing intrasexual differences incorporated distance to nearest escape feature and size of nearest escape feature. Regardless of maternal status, female Stone’s sheep used low-elevation plant communities early in the growing season that were characterized by more shrub species and increased cover. As the growing season progressed, they tracked a phenological stage, moving up in elevation and associating with communities that contained increasing amounts of moss and lichen cover. The patterns in behaviour, habitat use, and vegetation associations between intrasexual groups of Stone’s sheep were best characterized by the predation-risk hypothesis.
