Efficient secondary cooling water control level slab continuous casting process and quality are closely related. Casting solidification heat transfer model is the basis of process control and optimization, heat transfer model based on determining the secondary cooling system is the most widely used method for casting production process can be simulated. However, when considering the many factors affecting the production and input conditions change significantly, real-time and strain of this method is not guaranteed. Therefore, the artificial intelligence optimization algorithms such as genetic algorithms, neural networks, fuzzy controllers, introducing continuous casting secondary cooling water distribution and dynamics of optimal control methods, the rational allocation of caster secondary cooling water and dynamic control is important.

In order to more accurate simulation the solidification of billet continuous casting. The measured shell thickness and surface temperature have been used to revise the heat transfer model. The calculated results of the model are in excellent agreement with the experimental ones based on an actual casting machine. The revised model can excellent to simulate the billet solidification process. So it provides the possibility for better simulation the dynamic solidification process and optimizing of the secondary cooling water.

Secondary cooling is one of the important techniques of continuous casting. A mathematical model for heat transfer during solidification in continuous casting was established in researching on influence of the solidifying process on slab quality. The dynamic secondary cooling system has been analyzed with consideration of the principles, nozzles arrangement method and mathematical model of solidification process. The model was applied on some continuous casting machines. It indicates that the dynamic cooling model is better than conventional ones.

Water flux distribution largely influences the heat transfer and solidification of continuously-cast steel billets. In this paper, a secondary cooling strategy of transverse non-uniform water flux (i.e., higher flux density on billet center), was established and compared with the uniform cooling strategy using mathematical modeling. Specifically, a heat transfer model and a cellular automaton finite element coupling model were established to simulate the continuous casting of C80D steel billet. The water flux was measured using different nozzle configurations to assist the modeling. The mathematical results were validated by comparing the surface temperature and the solidification structure. It is shown that the non-uniform cooling strategy enables the increase of corner temperature and reduction in surface temperature difference, while a higher reheating rate is found on the surface center of the billet. Moreover, the non-uniform cooling strategy can enhance the cooling effect and refine the solidification structure. Accordingly, the liquid pool length is shortened, and the equiaxed crystal density is increased along with the decreased equiaxed crystal ratio. The uniform cooling strategy contributes to reducing internal cracks of billet, and the non-uniform one is beneficial for surface quality and central segregation. For C80D steel, the non-uniform cooling strategy outperforms the uniform one.

Spray cooling is a key technology in the continuous casting process and has a marked influence on the product quality. In order to obtain the heat transfer characteristics, which are closer to the actual continuous casting to serve the design, prediction and simulation, we created an experimental laboratory setup to investigate heat transfer characteristics of air mist spray cooling during the continuous casting secondary cooling process. A 200-mm thick sample of carbon steel was heated above 1000 °C, and then cooled in a water flux range of 0.84 to 3.0 L/(m2∙s). Determination of the boundary conditions involved experimental work comprising an evaluation of the thermal history and the heat flux and heat transfer coefficient (HTC) at the casting surface using inverse heat conduction numerical schemes. The results show that the heat fluxes were characterized via boiling curves that were functions of the slab surface temperatures. The heat flux was determined to be 2.9 × 105 W/m2 in the range of 1100 to 800 °C with a water flux of 2.1 L/(m2∙s). The critical heat flux increased with the increase of water flux. The HTC was close to a linear function of water flux. We also obtained the relation between the HTC and the water flux in the transition boiling region for surface temperatures of 850 to 950 °C.
