The Alfresco development tool, which includes Apache Tomcat, MySQL and WebService, is an open platform for building a functional database system in a Java website. In order to improve the enterprises’ management efficiency in specialized industrial townships, a micro-information system based on Alfresco development tool has been proposed. In the construction of the micro-information system, Alfresco database exhibits great superiority in network database architecture, data query with Lucene search engine, data management and data security. In this paper, the general design ideas, functions, key technologies and realization methods of the Alfresco database are introduced.

RDB has been dominant in the industry for the last decade. OODB is recongnized as a post-relational technology that can improve productivity, Hierarchical Database and Network Database were popular in the 1970s, and have been developed into legacy database systems. The DBMS of various data models have proliferated into many companies, and become their important assets. There is a need to integrate these database system into a data warehouse in the company. We investigate a solution to the problem by offering an architecture of a universal database for the connectivity of various DBMSs using different data models. A frame model is chosen to represent the conceptual and logical schema of the universal database, which structures an application domain into classes organized via generalization, aggregaton and user-defined relationships, and its data in relational tables. The schemas of the existing database systems are translated into frame model conceptual shcemas which are integrated into a global frame model in a knowledge representation that includes classes for object structure descriptions and constraints for supporting user-defined relationships. The universal database is implemented by a relational DBMS as a kernel. In addition to relational tables, the universal database consists of program area to emulate database navigation in nonrelatoinal DBMS, method classes to implement program calls to emulate methods of OODBMS, and contraint classes to preserve semantic and resolve naming conflicts in schema translation and integration. To ensure each database program access the universal database, a database gateway for each source DBMS is developed to translate their DML into SQL, which is chosen to be its kernel database language, for its user-friendliness, standardization and popularity in the industry.

The formation and existence of burrs is one of the common phenomena in machining. It affects directly machining accuracy and parts quality. Network database system for metal cutting burr is developed using ASP.NET platform. The management of metal cutting burr data, inquiry and prediction of cutting burrs types and sizes, optimization of cutting conditions for controlling burr forming which based on the reasoning method of BP neural networks are realized. The development and realization of network database of metal cutting burr provide a convenient way for data transmission between multi-workshop and across regions, promote the development of burr controlling technology and modern manufacture technology.

PACS disasters can, and do, appear in a variety of forms including storage hard disk failure, file corruption, network breakdown, and server malfunction. The PACS disasters are commonly classified into hardware, environmental and physical, network, database system, and server failures. A single point of hardware failure in PACS is at the PACS controller, or the main archive server. When it occurs, it renders the entire PACS inoperable and crippled, until the problem is diagnosed and resolved. Recently, various techniques were developed for the prevention of PACS disasters caused by the actual loss and inaccessibility of data. All those techniques are commonly called “High Availability (HA) Technologies” (Marcus, Stern, 2003). The objective of this chapter is to discuss various HA technologies for the prevention of PACS disasters.
