Abstract A derivative UV-spectrophotometric analytical procedure was developed for determination of three 4-quinolone antibacterials: norfloxacin (NFX), ciprofloxacin (CFX), and sparfloxacin (SFX). The method depends on the complexation of Cu(II) with the studied compounds in aqueous medium. A third order, measurement was applied for their quantification. A linear correlation was established between the amplitude of the peak and concentration for all the studied drugs in the range of 15–80, 35–120, and 200–700 ng/mL, with minimum detectability (S/N = 2) of 1.0, 1.3, and 5.1 ng/mL for NFX, CFX, and SFX, respectively. The method was successfully applied for accurate, sensitive, and selective determination of the studied drugs in bulk and tablets formulation with average percentage recoveries of 99.22 ± 0.55 to 100.33 ± 1.60. The results obtained were favorably compared with those of the reference method. The method was also used to determine sparfloxacin in spiked human plasma and urine. The results obtained were satisfactory, accurate, and precise.

In the present study, a fluorescent sensor L for sensing of Ce3+ ion was designed and characterized by XRD, 1HNMR, and FTIR. Its fluorescence behavior towards metal ion was examined by fluorescence spectroscopy. Chelation-enhanced fluorescence was shown by the sensor L upon interaction with Ce3+ ion. This fluorescent sensor exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity towards Ce3+ ion in acetonitrile solution, forming 2 : 1 (L : M) complex as determined by Job’s plot. Association constant was found to be 1×107 M−1 estimated from the Benesi-Hildebrand plot. No significant interference was observed in the presence of other studied alkali, alkaline, and transition metal ions. A rapid response was observed when employed for the determination of Ce3+ ion in spiked water samples with a limit of detection equal to 3.4×10−8 M.

In the present work, we have developed a sensitive platform for the selective determination of Hg(II) ions based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) electrode modified with poly cysteine (Poly-Cys). The Poly-Cys/rGO modified electrode was characterised by SEM, ATR-IR and its electrochemical behaviour was investigated through cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. The synergistic effect of rGO and poly-cysteine favoured the complexation of Hg(II) ions onto the surface of the modified electrode. The ions were then anodically stripped and the corresponding voltammograms recorded. The process of complexation followed by stripping was repeated with increasing concentrations of the metal ion. The linear range for the electrochemical determination of Hg(II) using the modified electrode was found to be from 0.05 to 2.7 μM with a detection limit of 0.006 μM. In addition, the electrode also exhibited good stability with negligible sensitivity towards interfering metal ions. The analytical applicability of the modified electrode was investigated by carrying out mercury determination in water samples obtained from various sources.

Excessive discharge of heavy metal ions will aggravate environment pollution and threaten human health. Thus, it is of significance to real-time detect metal ions and control discharge in the metallurgical wastewater. We developed an accurate and rapid approach based on the singular perturbation spectrum estimator and extreme gradient boosting (SPSE-XGBoost) algorithms to simultaneously determine multi-metal ion concentrations by UV–vis spectrometry. In the approach, the spectral data is expanded by multi-order derivative preprocessing, and then, the sensitive feature bands in each spectrum are extracted by feature importance (VI score) ranking. Subsequently, the SPSE-XGBoost model are trained to combine multi-derivative features and to predict ion concentrations. The experimental results indicate that the developed “Expand-Extract-Combine” strategy can not only overcome problems of background noise and spectral overlapping but also mine the deeper spectrum information by integrating important features. Moreover, the SPSE-XGBoost strategy utilizes the selected feature subset instead of the full-spectrum for calculation, which effectively improves the computing speed. The comparisons of different data processing methods are conducted. It outcomes that the proposed strategy outperforms other routine methods and can profoundly determine the concentrations of zinc, copper, cobalt, and nickel with the lowest RMSEP. Therefore, our developed approach can be implemented as a promising mean for real-time and on-line determination of multi-metal ion concentrations in zinc hydrometallurgy.
