The problem of robust estimation of optimal effort levels from surplus production models is considered. A variety of models are used to generate data, for the purpose of testing estimation schemes. The result of an estimation is an estimate of the optimal effort. These efforts are compared using the expected discounted value of a deterministic stock, which corresponds to the model used to generate the data. Such a criterion takes into account not only the loss due to bias in the estimated optimal effort, but also the loss due to the variance of the estimator. Estimation is difficult if there is a lack of informative variation in effort levels or stock sizes. In such cases, the estimation scheme which maximizes the criterion described above sacrifices realism in the representation of the stock-production relationship in order to reduce the variance of the estimate of optimal effort. We present a composite estimation scheme which performs acceptably in all the cases we have examined, and whose performance degrades slowly as the amount of information in the data decreases.

This paper addresses the problem of unknown input fractional-order functional state observer design for a class of fractional-order time-delay nonlinear systems. The nonlinearities consist of two parts where one part is assumed to satisfy both the one-sided Lipschitz condition and the quadratically inner-bounded condition and the other is not necessary to be Lipschitz and can be regarded as an unknown input, making the wider class of considered nonlinear systems. By taking the advantages of recent results on Caputo fractional derivative of a quadratic function, we derive new sufficient conditions with the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to guarantee the asymptotic stability of the systems. Four examples are also provided to show the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.

This paper presents a precision fault reconstruction scheme for a class of nonlinear systems involving unknown input disturbances. First, using the coordinate transformation algorithm, the disturbances and faults of the system are fully decoupled. Therefore, it is possible to eliminate the influence of disturbances to the system, namely, better disturbances robustness. On this basis, the design of a sliding mode state observer makes the most genuine reconstruction realizable, instead of estimation of faults. Furthermore, with the equivalent principle of sliding mode variable structure, the precision reconstruction of arbitrary nonlinear faults is achieved. Finally, the applications of fault reconstruction in a third-order nonlinear theoretical model with disturbances and in a single-link robot system, respectively, have demonstrated the validity of the proposed scheme.

The integrated services digital broadcasting-terrestrial (ISDB-T) system is designed in order to accommodate high-quality video/audio and multimedia services, using band segmented transmission orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (BST-OFDM) scheme. In the ISDB-T system, the pilot configuration varies depending on whether a segment uses a coherent or differential modulation. Therefore, it is necessary to perform a joint estimation of carrier frequency offset (CFO) and sampling frequency offset (SFO) independent of the segment format in the ISDB-T system. The goal is to complete those synchronization tasks while considering an information-carrying transmission and multiplexing configuration control (TMCC) signal as pilot symbols. It is demonstrated through numerical simulations that the differential BPSK-modulated TMCC information can be efficiently used for a least-squares estimation of CFO and SFO, offering an acceptable performance.
