AbstractThe general idea of the methodology for the comprehensive reliability analysis of district heating systems (DHS), developed earlier by the author of this paper, is a joint considering and modelling of each technological processes, including fuel supply to heat sources (HS), generation of heat energy by these HS and its distribution on district heating network (HN). For solving this problem different methods and models are applied: statistical testing method, Markov random processes, methods of the theory of hydraulic circuits, basic laws of district heating and heat transfer processes, etc. In this paper the main attention is paid to the results of the practical application of methods and models of a comprehensive reliability analysis of DHS using the example of calculations performed for the actual DHS scheme of the Shelekhov city (Irkutsk region, Russia). Different stages of the case study are considered, including preparation of initial data, simulation modelling of fuel supply to HS, modelling of the Markov random process describing operate of DHS, calculation of post-failure modes in HN, evaluation of nodal reliability indices (RI), decomposition analysis of reliability. Based on the analysis of calculation results some preliminary directions are formulated to the increase of reliability for studied DHS. These data are the basis for a comprehensive reliability synthesis (optimization) of DHS, the solution of which is the subject of special perspective stage in development of the research.

This paper describes the reliability analysis of shear connection in composite beams with profiled steel sheeting. The profiled steel sheeting had transverse ribs perpendicular to the steel beam. The level of safety of shear connection, and failure modes were determinate. An extensive parametric study was conducted to study the effects on the safety and behaviour of shear connection by changing the profiled steel sheeting geometries, the diameter and height of headed stud, as well as the strength of concrete. We compared the level safety calculated using the American specification, British standard and European code for headed stud shear connectors in composite slabs with profiled steel sheeting perpendicular to the steel beam. It is found that the design overestimated the level safety of shear connection.

On the basis of the Bouc-Wen hysteretic model, a numerical method for the reliability analysis of stochastic multi-degree-of-freedom hysteretic system with correlated failure modes is presented. Under the first passage model, considering the random caused by hysteretic loop itself, the theory of incomplete probability information and the fourth-moment technique and Gram Charlier series are employed to develop a numerical reliability analysis method systematically. The numerical example reveals that in most of cases, though system is characterized by a set of independent random parameters, the responses are strongly correlated, and correlation coefficient between the responses is fluctuated with time. The system reliability with correlated failure modes is evaluated with proposed method, and the result obtained by this method is compared well with the Monte-Carlo simulations.

This paper presents a reliability analysis of wood I-joists for both strength and serviceability limit states. Results are obtained from a finite element analysis coupled with a first-order reliability method. For the strength limit state of load-carrying capacity, multiple failure modes are considered, each involving the interaction of several random variables. Good agreement is achieved between the test results and the theoretical prediction of variability in load-carrying capacity. Finally, a procedure is given to obtain load-sharing adjustment factors applicable to repetitive member systems such as floors and flat roofs. Current probabilistic design methods mainly focus on single mode of failure, under the consideration on random variables including geometry, loading, and material properties. However, due to the complex structural characters and unevenly distributed temperature, turbine disks are always undergoing multiple potential failure modes, which should be effectively evaluated under a coupling scheme in reliability analysis. To this end, a collaborative response surface method involving multiple potential modes was established, aligning individual failure modes that were precisely evaluated via linear heteroscedastic regression analysis. To validate our model, reliability assessment was conducted on a turbine disk in turbo-shaft engine, where the coupling failure including low cycle fatigue and creep-fatigue was considered. This method can be an effective tool in the evaluation of reliability analysis involving multiple failure modes.
