AbstractMulti-junction thin-film devices have emerged as very promising PV materials due to reduced cost, manufacturing ease, efficiency and long term performance. The consequent growing interest of the PV community has lead to the development of new methods for the correction of indoor measurements to standard test conditions (STC), as presented in this paper. The experimental setup for spectral response measurement of multi-junction large-area thin-film modules is presented. A method for reliable corrections of indoor current-voltage characterization to STC is presented: results are compared with outdoor measurements where irradiance conditions are close to standard ones, highlighting ongoing challenges in standard characterization of such devices.

ABSTRACTCurrent-matching between junctions in a multi-junction photovoltaic device is fundamental for its performance prediction: the measurement of the spectral response of each junction provides a valuable information to optimize the device performance. Various aspects make spectral response measurements of such devices particularly challenging. In this work these aspects are analysed theoretically and guidelines to avoid their impact in the experimental practice are given.

Thin-film photovoltaic modules based on Cu-In-Ga-Se-S (CIS) and CdTe are already being produced with high-quality and solar conversion efficiencies of around 10%, with values up to 14% expected in the near future. The integrated interconnection of single cells into large-area modules of 0.6×1.2m2 enables low-cost mass production, so that thin-film modules will soon be able to compete with conventional silicon-wafer-based modules. This contribution provides an overview of the basic technologies for CdTe and CIS modules, the research and development (R&D) issues, production technology and capacities, the module performance in long-term outdoor testing, and their use in installations.

ABSTRACTWe present a procedure for calibrating tandem thin film photovoltaic modules under natural sunlight. The distinct steps involve pre-conditioning via light soaking, spectral response measurements and I-V measurements under natural sunlight. The measurements were done using a crystalline silicon reference cell as well as two filtered reference cells designed to spectrally match the top and bottom junctions in the tandem module.
