Polydiacetylene (PDA), conjugated polymer, is an attractive sensor material that has a unique optical property to transform its color from visible blue to fluorescent red upon environmental perturbations like heat, pH, specific metal ions, and etc. In this study, we propose a novel method to detect metal ions by using polydiacetylene (PDA)-embedded sensor microfibers fabricated with a 3-D hydrodynamic focusing technique using alginate and calcium solutions. Moreover, by changing the head groups of PDA, we successfully detected Al3+ and Zn2+ ions up to 1mM using PDA micro fibers.

ABSTRACTThe detection of heavy metals in subsurface strata currently requires tedious sampling procedures followed by laboratory analysis using techniques such as atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) or inductively couple plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). These techniques are extremely accurate and capable of detecting very low concentrations of metal ions. The main drawback of these techniques is that they are time consuming, expensive to perform and not portable. A portable sensor capable of detecting metals ion in solution is highly desirable. Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV) can be utilized as a reliable method for the trace detection of metal ions in water. In order to improve the sensitivity of the electrochemical sensor, conjugated polymer films can be coated on the surface of the glassy carbon working electrodes. Stable films of poly (3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene) [PEDOT] and polythiophene copolymer [PTCPTA] were electrochemically synthesized on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode. These polymer modified electrodes were utilized for the detection of cadmium in water. The sensors are capable of detecting trace concentrations of cadmium approaching the maximum contamination limits imposed by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA).

AbstractWe have synthesized a novel conjugated polymer containing terpyridine receptors. This conjugated, polymer-based fluorescent chemosensory system exhibits unusually high sensitivity toward transition metal ions (∼-10−9 M). The fluorescence quenching response of the terpyridine containing conjugated polymer to transition metal ions is related to a facile energy migration in which energy from absorption of a photon, can migrate through the conjugated polymer system and be quenched by trapping sites. Terpyridine receptors can readily bind to transition metal ions and create a low lying Metal to Ligand Charge Transfer (MLCT) state which can act as an excitation trap.

A novel diethynyl functionalized pillar[5]arene, that is a pentabenzenacyclodecaphane derivative, has been synthesized and polymerized with p-dihalobenzene to form a fishing rod-like conjugated polymer, where one of the benzenes in the pillar[5]arene rings is incorporated into a poly(arylene ethynylene) backbone.
