To study the effect of hyperbranched polyester with different kinds of terminal groups on the thermomechanical and dielectric properties of silica–epoxy resin composite, a molecular dynamics simulation method was utilized. Pure epoxy resin and four groups of silica–epoxy resin composites were established, where the silica surface was hydrogenated, grafted with silane coupling agents, and grafted with hyperbranched polyester with terminal carboxyl and terminal hydroxyl, respectively. Then the thermal conductivity, glass transition temperature, elastic modulus, dielectric constant, free volume fraction, mean square displacement, hydrogen bonds, and binding energy of the five models were calculated. The results showed that the hyperbranched polyester significantly improved the thermomechanical and dielectric properties of the silica–epoxy composites compared with other surface treatments, and the terminal groups had an obvious effect on the enhancement effect. Among them, epoxy composite modified by the hyperbranched polyester with terminal carboxy exhibited the best thermomechanical properties and lowest dielectric constant. Our analysis of the microstructure found that the two systems grafted with hyperbranched polyester had a smaller free volume fraction (FFV) and mean square displacement (MSD), and the larger number of hydrogen bonds and greater binding energy, indicating that weaker strength of molecular segments motion and stronger interfacial bonding between silica and epoxy resin matrix were the reasons for the enhancement of the thermomechanical and dielectric properties.

This paper reported a facile one-pot strategy for fabrication of sulfonic graphene oxide–epoxy resin nanocomposites. The rheological and thermal properties were employed to characterize the viscosity and the curing temperature of epoxy resin. Fourier transform infrared spectra for sulfonic graphene oxide and nanocomposites indicated that the sulfonic graphene oxide contains chemical cross-linking responsible for better interactions with the epoxy resin. The state of dispersion was evaluated at different scales by still picture camera and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Tensile property tests indicated that the tensile strength and elasticity modulus of sulfonic graphene oxide–epoxy resin nanocomposites decreased slowly with increasing of sulfonic graphene oxide content. The critical flexural property and impact strength of epoxy resin filled with sulfonic graphene oxide nanocomposites were measured. The content, size, and dispersion state of sulfonic graphene oxide were examined. It was found that the content of sulfonic graphene oxide has greater impact on both flexural property and impact strength of nanocomposites compared with other conditions. For instance, the impact strength increased by 113.0% and the flexural strength and modulus increased by 39.3% and 55.7% using 1 wt.% sulfonic graphene oxide as compared to neat epoxy resin.

The development of composite materials is increasingly widespread, which require superior mechanical properties. From many studies, it is found that the mechanical properties of composite materials are influenced by various factors, including the reinforcement content, both in the form of fibers and particle powder. However, those studies have not investigated the effect of the hardener weight fraction on the mechanical properties of resin composite materials. Even though its function as a hardener is likely to affect its mechanical properties, it might obtain the optimum composition of the reinforcing content and hardener fraction to get the specific mechanical properties. This study examines the effect of hardener weight fraction combined with fiber powder content on mechanical properties of EPR-174 epoxy resin matrix composite and determines the optimum of Them. The research was conducted by testing a sample of composite matrix resin material reinforced with coconut fiber powder. The Powder content was made in 3 levels, i.e.: 6%, 8%, and 10%. While the hardener fraction of resin was made in 3 levels, i.e.: 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6. The test results showed that pure resin had the lowest impact strength of 1.37 kJ/m2. The specimen with a fiber powder content of 6% has the highest impact strength i.e.: 4.92 kJ/m2. The hardener fraction of 0.5 has the highest impact strength i.e.: 4.55 kJ/m2. The fiber powder content of 8% produced the highest shear strength i.e.: 1.00 MPa. Meanwhile, the hardener fraction of 0.6 has the highest shear strength i.e.: 2.03 MPa.
