Complex interaction mechanism exists between the pile group and soil. To realize the pile-soil load transmission mechanism in detail, the failure pattern of pile groups installed in dense sand considering different pile spacing was investigated by means of laboratory experimental model test and three-dimensional discrete element method. The results suggested that the narrow pile spacing was beneficial to the development of the pile tip resistance, and it enhanced the bearing performance of the pile group at the initial stage of settlement. The pile spacing changed the shaft resistance pattern with modification of the strain energy mechanism released within the subsoil. The pile group with 6b pile spacing had higher composite group efficiency. A joint fan-shaped displacement zone was formed beneath the pile tip for the pile group with 3b pile spacing; this pile foundation presented the block failure mechanism. The sand displacement beneath the cap for the pile group with 6b pile spacing mainly located on the upper part of the piles, the sand displacement around both sides of the piles presented asymmetric, and a relatively independent fan-shaped displacement zone was formed beneath the pile tip.

AbstractThe force and power of flapping plates are studied by vortex dynamic analysis. Based on the dynamic analysis of the numerical results of viscous flow past three-dimensional flapping plates, it is found that the force and power are strongly dominated by the vortical structures close to the body. Further, the dynamics of the flapping plate is investigated in terms of viscous vortex-ring model. It is revealed that the model can reasonably reflect the essential properties of the ring-like vortical structure in the wake, and the energy of the plate transferred to the flow for the formation of each vortical structure possesses a certain relation. Moreover, simplified formulae for the thrust and efficiency are proposed and verified to be reliable by the numerical solutions and experimental measurements of animal locomotion. The results obtained in this study provide physical insight into the understanding of the dynamic mechanisms relevant to flapping locomotion.

Three formulations for a flexible spatial beam element for dynamic analysis are compared: a Timoshenko beam with large displacements and rotations, a fully parametrized element according to the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF), and an ANCF element based on an elastic line approach. In the last formulation, the shear locking of the antisymmetric bending mode is avoided by the application of either the two-field Hellinger–Reissner or the three-field Hu–Washizu variational principle. The comparison is made by means of linear static deflection and eigenfrequency analyses on stylized problems. It is shown that the ANCF fully parametrized element yields too large torsional and flexural rigidities, and shear locking effectively suppresses the antisymmetric bending mode. The presented ANCF formulation with the elastic line approach resolves most of these problems.
