Abstract The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has begun implementing HIV self-testing to boost the first “95” of the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets by 2025. This study aims to assess the performance and usability of the Exacto Test HIV (Biosynex, Strasbourg, France) self-test in the lab and in the field. The Exacto Test HIV self-test demonstrated high virological performance (sensitivity, 99.6%; specificity, 100%) in the lab and in the field in the hand of untrained users (sensitivity, 100%; specificity, 98.9%). Taken together, the excellent performance and usability characteristics of the Exacto Test HIV (Biosynex) self-test make the kit a viable option for HIV self-testing in the DRC.

The paper presents the theory of performance sensitivity distribution and a novel robust parameter design technique. In the theory, a Jacobian matrix describes the effect of the component tolerance to the system performance, and the performance distribution is characterized in the variation space by a set of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Thus, the feasible performance space is depicted as an ellipsoid. The size, shape, and orientation of the ellipsoid describe the quantity as well as quality of the feasible space and, therefore, the performance sensitivity distribution against the tolerance variation. The robustness of a design is evaluated by comparing the fitness between the ellipsoid feasible space and the tolerance space, which is a block, through a set of quantitative and qualitative indexes. The robust design can then be determined. The design approach is demonstrated in a mechanism design problem. Because of the generality of the analysis theory, the method can be used in any design situation as long as the relationship between the performance and design variables can be expressed analytically.

Abstract A generalized accuracy performance synthesis methodology for planar closed chain mechanisms is proposed. The relationship between the sensitivity to variations of link lengths and the location of the moving pivots of four-link mechanisms is investigated for the particular objective of three and four position synthesis. In the three design positions case, sensitivity maps with isosensitivity curves plotted in the design solution space allow the designer to synthesize a planar mechanism with desired sensitivity value or to optimize sensitivity from a set of acceptable design solutions. In the case of four design positions, segments of the Burmester design curves that exhibit specified sensitivity to link length tolerance are identified. A performance sensitivity criterion is used as a convenient and a useful way of discriminating between many possible solutions to a given synthesis problem.
