ABSTRACTConjugated inorganic/organic hybrid polymers, poly(phenylene vinylene ferrocenyl vinylene), was prepared by condensation polymerization of bisphosphonate reagent and ferrocenedialdehyde. Conjugated polymers having long alkyl side chains is very soluble in various organic solvents and thin polymer films can be easily produced by spin-coating technique. UV-Vis., NMR, cyclicvoltammetry, and GPC analysis were used to characterize the properties of conjugated polymers, and the averaged molecular weight was in the range of 7,000~25,000 (vs. PS standard). Electrical conductivity measurement of this processible conjugated polymer either in powder or in thin solid film showed very low conductivity probably due to the slow chain-to-chain hopping process. Third order nonlinear optical property of the conjugated polymers was measured as high as ϰ(3) = 1.24×10−8 esu in spin-coated thin film.

Catalyst-transfer condensation polymerization, in which the catalyst activates the polymer end-group, followed by reaction with the monomer and transfer of the catalyst to the elongated polymer end-group, has made it feasible to control the molecular weight, polydispersity, and end-groups of π-conjugated polymers. In this paper, our recent progress of Kumada–Tamao Ni catalyst-transfer coupling polymerization and Suzuki–Miyaura Pd catalyst-transfer coupling polymerization is described. In the former polymerization method, the polymerization of Grignard pyridine monomers was investigated for the synthesis of well-defined n-type π-conjugated polymers. Para-type pyridine monomer, 3-alkoxy-2-bromo-5-chloromagnesiopyridine, afforded poly(pyridine-2,5-diyl) with low solubility in the reaction solvent, whereas meta-type pyridine monomer, 2-alkoxy-5-bromo-3-chloromagnesio-pyridine, yielded soluble poly(pyridine-3,5-diyl) with controlled molecular weight and low polydispersity. In Suzuki–Miyaura catalyst-transfer coupling polymerization, t-Bu3PPd(Ph)Br was an effective catalyst, and well-defined poly(p-phenylene) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were obtained by concomitant use of CsF/18-crown-6 as a base in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and a small amount of water.

AbstractThe regulation of polymer topology and the precise control over the monomer sequence is crucial and challenging in polymer science. Herein, we report an efficient solution-phase synthetic strategy to prepare regio- and sequence-controlled conjugated polymers with topological variations via the usage of methyliminodiacetic acid (MIDA) boronates. Based on the solubility of MIDA boronates and their unusual binary affinity for silica gel, the synthesized regio- and sequence-defined conjugated oligomers can be rapidly purified via precipitation or automatic liquid chromatography. These synthesized discrete oligomers can be used for iterative exponential and sequential growth to obtain linear and dendrimer-like star polymers. Moreover, different topological sequence-controlled conjugated polymers are conveniently prepared from these discrete oligomers via condensation polymerization. By investigating the structure-property relationship of these polymers, we find that the optical properties are strongly influenced by the regiochemistry, which may give inspiration to the design of optoelectronic polymeric materials.
