Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has strong potential to be utilized in various aspects of veterinary dentistry. Using ex vivo rat maxillary bone and teeth, the purpose of this study was to compare gray value, surface area, and volumetric measurements of teeth with and without experimental periodontitis by CBCT. Periodontitis was induced in 36 molar teeth, while 36 teeth with a healthy periodontium served as control. Images of each specimen along with teeth were obtained using CBCT. The following measurements for each tooth with periodontitis (n = 36) were recorded: gray value measurement, width, height, depth, surface area, and volume of the alveolar bone loss. For the control group (n = 36), gray value measurement, surface area, and volume of the alveolar bone were recorded. All measurements were repeated after 3 weeks. As the gold standard, the rat maxillas were decalcified and paraffin-embedded for further immunocytochemical study. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. Significance level was set at P < .05. Correlation values for gray value, width, height, depth, surface area, and volume measurements were 0.983, 0.966, 0.962, 0.880, 0.998, and 0.999, respectively, for the first and second measurements. One way ANOVA showed statistically significant differences between teeth with and without alveolar bone destruction conducted for gray value, surface area, and volume measurements ( P = .000). Mean gray value, surface area, and volume measurements decreased 56.46%, 81.89%, and 78.56%, respectively, for teeth with alveolar bone destruction in comparison to healthy teeth. Cone-beam computed tomography provided useful qualitative and quantitative information regarding induced periodontitis in the rat maxilla.

The aim of the study was to build numerical models of cucumbers cv. Śremski with the use of a 3D scanner and to analyze selected geometric parameters of cucumber fruits based on the developed models. The basic dimensions of cucumber fruits–length, width and thickness—were measured with an electronic caliper with an accuracy of d = 0.01 mm, and the surface area and volume of fruits were determined by 3D scanning. Cucumber fruits were scanned with an accuracy of d = 0.13 mm. Six models approximating the shape of cucumber fruits were developed with the use of six geometric figures and their combinations to calculate the surface area and volume of the analyzed agricultural products were identified. The surface area and volume of cucumber fruits calculated by 3D scanning and mathematical formulas were compared. The surface area calculated with the model combining two truncated cones and two hemispheres with different diameters, joined base-to-base, was characterized by the smallest relative error of 3%. Fruit volume should be determined with the use of mathematical formulas derived for a model composed of an ellipsoid and a spheroid. The proposed geometric models can be used in research and design.

There was a method developed that generates the three-dimensional model of not axisymmetric produce, based on an arbitrary number of photos. The model can serve as a basis for calculating the surface area and the volume of produce. The efficiency of the reconstruction was tested on bell peppers and artificial shapes. In case of bell peppers 3-dimensional reconstruction was created from 4 images rotated in 45° angle intervals. The surface area and the volume were estimated on the basis of the reconstructed area. Furthermore, a new and simple reference method was devised to give precise results for the surface area of bell pepper. The results show that this 3D reconstruction-based surface area and volume calculation method is suitable to determine the surface area and volume of definite bell peppers with an acceptable error.

The immediate and long-term results of treatment of 30 patients with severe pain syndrome of the lumbar region, who underwent operations on denervation of DOS, were studied. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of minimally invasive technologies for the treatment of pain in the lumbar region (denervation of DOS), to study the near and distant results of these treatment methods. Denervation DOS is an effective minimally invasive method for the treatment of facet syndrome caused by spondylarthrosis. It allows in the early and distant postoperative periods to significantly reduce the pain syndrome and improve the quality of life of patients.

Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder in which neurological basis is largely unknown. The Corpus Callosum (CC) is the main commissure that connects the cerebral hemispheres. Previous evidence suggests the involvement of the CC in the pathophysiology of autism. Aim: The aim of our study is to assess whether there were any changes in Corpus Callosum (CC) area and volume and to reveal the relationship between Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) features in genu and splenium of corpus callosum in children with ASD. Methods: Eighteen patient and 15 controls were recruited. The volumetric sagittal TI images were used to provide measurements of midsagittal corpus callosum surface area while FA, MD, RD, and ADC values were extracted from genu and splenium of corpus callosum after which the correlation in the area and volume in ASD children was examined. Results: CC area and volume in children with ASD were decreased than controls. FA values obtained from the genu and splenum of CC were significantly lower and RD values were significantly higher. A positive correlation was observed between the FA of the genu and splenium and area and volume of the CC. There was a negative correlation between ADC, MD and RD of CC and area and volume measurements. Conclusion: The conclusions in the interrelations of morphometric and DTI data may demonstrate a likelihood of damages in the axons and cortical neurons. The results showed that there existed microstructural damages from the DTI findings. Furthermore, the decrease in FA could be a representation of the reduction in the myelination in nerve pathways, impaired integrity, reduced axonal density, and organization. Indeed, the changes in volumetric and microstructural of CC could be useful in evaluating underlying pathophysiology in children with autism.
