High speed photography using the Cranz-Schardin camera was performed to study the crack divergence and divergence angle in thermally tempered glass. A tempered 3.5 mm thick glass plate was used as a specimen. It was shown that two types of bifurcation and branching existed as the crack divergence. The divergence angle was smaller than the value calculated from the principle of optimal design and showed an acute angle.

This study aims to explore whether gender differences exist in the architectural and mechanical properties of the medial gastrocnemius–Achilles tendon unit (gMTU) in vivo. Thirty-six healthy male and female adults without training experience and regular exercise habits were recruited. The architectural and mechanical properties of the gMTU were measured via an ultrasonography system and MyotonPRO, respectively. Independent t-tests were utilized to quantify the gender difference in the architectural and mechanical properties of the gMTU. In terms of architectural properties, the medial gastrocnemius (MG)’s pennation angle and thickness were greater in males than in females, whereas no substantial gender difference was observed in the MG’s fascicle length; the males possessed Achilles tendons (ATs) with a longer length and a greater cross-sectional area than females. In terms of mechanical properties, the MG’s vertical stiffness was lower and the MG’s logarithmic decrement was greater in females than in males. Both genders had no remarkable difference in the AT’s vertical stiffness and logarithmic decrement. Gender differences of individuals without training experience and regular exercise habits exist in the architectural and mechanical properties of the gMTU in vivo. The MG’s force-producing capacities, ankle torque, mechanical efficiency and peak power were higher in males than in females. The load-resisting capacities of AT were greater and the MG strain was lesser in males than in females. These findings suggest that males have better physical fitness, speed and performance in power-based sports events than females from the perspective of morphology and biomechanics.

Previous studies on palm phyllotaxis deal mainly with the mature trunk. The goals of this study are (i) to determine the relationship between the number of parastichies, the divergence angle, and the plastochrone ratio at the level of the shoot apical meristem; (ii) to examine whether there are fluctuations in the divergence angle; (iii) to interpret the significance of phyllotactic parameters with respect to the mode of growth of the apex. The tubular base of the leaf primordium is more or less asymmetrical, and completely surrounds the shoot apical meristem. The phyllotactic system corresponds to a (2, 3) conspicuous parastichy pair. The mean divergence angle per apex varies between 126.9° ± 9.3° (mean ± SD) and 135. 8° ± 8.0°. Divergence angles for all apices fluctuate within a range of 115.89° to 157.33°. The mean plastochrone ratios between apices varies from 1.35 ± 0.18 to 1.58 ± 0.12. The plastochrone ratio at each plastochrone for all apices ranges from 1.09 to 2.00. There is no correlation between the angle of divergence and the plastochrone ratio. There is a fluctuation in the value of the divergence angle that falls within the range predicted by the fundamental theorem of phyllotaxis. The high value of the ratio of the diameter of leaf primordia over the diameter of the apex, and the long plastochrone might explain the lack of correlation between certain phyllotactic parameters.

Abstract Effect of nozzle geometry (such as throat diameter of a barrel nozzle, exit diameter and exit divergence angle of a divergent nozzle) on HVOF thermal spraying process (thermodynamical behavior of combustion gas and spray particles) was investigated by numerical simulation and experiments with Jet KoteTM II system. The process changes inside the nozzle as obtained by numerical simulation studies were related to the coating properties. A NiCrAIY alloy powder was used for the experimental studies. While the throat diameter of the barrel nozzle was found to have only a slight effect on the microstructure, hardness, oxygen content and deposition efficiency of the coatings, the change in divergent section length (rather than exit diameter and exit divergence angle) had a significant effect. With increase in divergent section length of the nozzle, the amount of oxide content of the NiCrAIY coatings decreased and the deposition efficiency increased significantly. Also, with increase in the exit diameter of the divergent nozzle, the gas temperature and the degree of melting of the particle decreased. On the other hand the calculated particle velocity showed a slight increase while the gas velocity increased significantly.

<p>At present, Chinese high-speed railway operating mileage has exceeded 20 thousand km, and the proportion of the bridge is nearly 50%. Moreover, high-speed railway design speed is constantly improving. Therefore, controlling the deformation of the bridge structure strictly is particularly important to train speed-up as well as to ensure the smoothness of the line. This paper, based on the field test, shows the vertical and transverse absolute displacements of bridge structure by field collection. What’s more, resonance speed and dynamic coefficient of bridge were studied. The results show that: the horizontal and vertical stiffness of the bridge can meet the requirements of <b>Chinese “high-speed railway design specification” (HRDS)</b>, and the structure design can be optimized. However, the dynamic coefficient may be greater than the specification suggested value. And the simply supported beam with CRTSII ballastless track has second-order vertical resonance velocity 306km/h and third-order transverse resonance velocity 312km/h by test results, which are all coincide with the theoretical resonance velocity.</p>

In this paper, a finite element model of membrane air spring in the vehicle is established, and its vertical stiffness characteristics under a certain inflation pressure are analysed. The result of finite element simulation method is compared with the result of the air spring bench test. The accuracy and reliability of the finite element simulation method in nonlinear analysis of air spring system are verified. In addition, according to the finite element method, the influence of the installation of the air spring limit sleeve on its stiffness is verified.

In the combustor inlet diffuser section of gas turbine engine, high-velocity air from compressor flows into the diffuser, where a considerable portion of the inlet velocity head PT3 − PS3 is converted to static pressure (PS) before the airflow enters the combustor. Modern high through-flow turbine engine compressors are highly loaded and usually have high inlet Mach numbers. With high compressor exit Mach numbers, the velocity head at the compressor exit station may be as high as 10% of the total pressure. The function of the diffuser is to recover a large proportion of this energy. Otherwise, the resulting higher total pressure loss would result in a significantly higher level of engine specific fuel consumption. The diffuser performance must also be sensitive to inlet velocity profiles and geometrical variations of the combustor relative to the location of the pre-diffuser exit flow path. Low diffuser pressure losses with high Mach numbers are more rapidly achieved with increasing length. However, diffuser length must be short to minimize engine length and weight. A good diffuser design should have a well considered balance between the confliction requirements for low pressure losses and short engine lengths. The present paper describes the effect of divergence angle on diffuser performance for gas turbine combustion chamber using Computational Fluid Dynamic Approach. The flow through the diffuser is numerically solved for divergence angles ranging from 5 to 25°. The flow separation and formation of wake regions are studied.
