Wild Oat (Avena FatuaL.) and Canary Grass (Phalaris MinorRitz.) Management Through AllelopathyEnvironmental contamination, herbicide resistance development among weeds and health concerns due to over and misuse of synthetic herbicides has led the researchers to focus on alternative weed management strategies. Allelochemicals extracted from various plant species can act as natural weed inhibitors. In this study, allelopathic extracts from four plant species sorghum [Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench], mulberry (Morus albaL.), barnyard grass [Echinochloa crusgalli(L.) Beauv.], winter cherry [Withania somnifera(L.)] were tested for their potential to inhibit the most problematic wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) weeds wild oat (Avena fatuaL.) and canary grass (Phalaris minorRitz.). Data regarding time to start germination, time to 50% germination, mean germination time, final germination percentage, germination energy, root and shoot length, number of roots, number of leaves, and seedling fresh and dry weight was recorded for both the weeds, which showed that mulberry was the most inhibitory plant species while sorghum showed least allelopathic suppression against wild oat. Mulberry extracts resulted in a complete inhibition of the wild oat germination. The allelopathic potential for different plants against wild oat was in the order: mulberry > winter cherry > barnyard grass > sorghum. Mulberry, barnyard grass and winter cherry extracts resulted in a complete inhibition of canary grass. Sorghum however exhibited least suppressive or in some cases stimulatory effects on canary grass. Plants revealing strong allelopathic potential can be utilized to derive natural herbicides for weed control.

Albizia richardiana, a fast-growing, large deciduous tree belonging to the Fabaceae family, grows well in hot and humid areas but mainly grows in the tropics of the Old World. The medicinal and other uses of Albizia richardiana are well documented, but the phytotoxic effects of this tree have not yet been investigated. We conducted this study to investigate the phytotoxic activity of Albizia richardiana leaves and to identify growth inhibitory substances for controlling weeds in a sustainable way. Aqueous methanol extracts of Albizia richardiana leaves greatly suppressed the growth of cress and barnyard grass seedlings in a concentration- and species-dependent manner. Two phytotoxic substances were separated using several purification steps and characterized through spectral analysis as dehydrovomifoliol and loliolide. Dehydrovomifoliol and loliolide significantly arrested the seedling growth of cress in the concentrations of 0.1 and 0.01 mM, respectively. The extract concentrations needed for 50% growth inhibition (I50 values) of cress seedlings were 3.16–3.01 mM for dehydrovomifoliol and 0.03–0.02 mM for loliolide. The results suggest that these two allelopathic substances might play a vital role in the phytotoxicity of Albizia richardiana leaves.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of organic materials to remediate contaminated soil with heavy metals. A pot study was performed by growing maize (Zea mays) in metal contaminated soil (10 kg pot-1) and soils amendments with cow manure dust, poultry manure dust, vermicompost dust, fern dust, water hyacinth dust, mustard stover dust and barnyard grass dust each at 5 g kg-1 soil. The results showed that Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr and Co uptake by maize depended on the organic materials type. Water hyacinth dust, fern dust, mustard stover dust, and barnyard grass dust addition led to decreased metal content in maize, and this decrease was better expressed with 20.5 to 33.3% for fern dust, 17.3 to 22.0 % for water hyacinth, 18.6 to 21.3% for mustard stover dust, 17.33 to 20.5% for barnyard grass dust. Cow manure dust, poultry manure dust and vermicompost dust led to increased metal content in the maize, and this increase was 6.80 to 18.7 % for cow manure, 18.9 to 86.7 % for poultry manure and 17.4 to 16.0 % for vermicompost. The different effectiveness of organic amendment on metal uptake by maize plant could be due to the nature of organic matter where water hyacinth dust, fern dust, mustard stover dust, and barnyard grass dust were mainly originated from plant. On the other hand, cow manure, poultry manure and vermicompost were mainly the excreta collected from cattle, poultry and earthworms. Оптимизирована рецептура хлеба «Паляница украинская» путем введения 15% пайзовой муки (ПМ) и 5% льняной муки (ЛМ) взамен части пшеничной. Образец с добавкой 15% ПМ и 5% ЛМ имел достаточно высокий показатель бродильной активности и самый высокий показатель подъемной силы – 28 мин в отличие от образца с тем же количеством ПМ, но без добавки ЛМ (43,3 мин) и контрольного образца без добавок (45,5 мин). Добавка в рецептуру хлеба ПМ увеличила в нем содержание белка на 14,68%, золы – более чем в 2 раза. Добавление ЛМ нейтрализовало специфические аромат и вкус пайзы, повлияло на формоудерживающую способность полуфабриката: во время выпечки изделие не расплывалось, выпеченный хлеб имел эластичный пропеченный мякиш с равномерной пористостью, на корке отсутствовали трещины и подрывы. В результате добавки ПМ и ЛМ опытный образец приобрел насыщенный цвет корки и мякиша, приятный аромат, напоминающий аромат ржаного хлеба. Образец хлеба, содержащий 15% ПМ и 5% ЛМ, по истечении 72 ч хранения имел наименьший показатель крошковатости – 3,59% к массе мякиша хлеба и самый высокий показатель набухаемости – 154,5%, лучше других образцов сохранил потребительские качества: вкус и аромат изделия практически не изменились, мягкость мякиша снизилась незначительно. Внесение ПМ взамен части пшеничной в рецептуру хлеба способствует увеличению продолжительности срока хранения изделия, что позволяет рекомендовать использование пайзовой муки в производстве хлебобулочных изделий. The formulation of bread «Palyanitsa ukrainskaya» is optimized by introducing 15% of barnyard grass flour (GF) and 5% of flax flour (FF) instead of wheat flour. The sample with the addition of 15% of GF and 5% of FF had a sufficiently high rate of fermentation activity and the highest rate of lifting force – 28 min in contrast to the sample with the same amount of GF, but without the addition of FF (43,3 min) and the control sample without additives (45,5 min). Additive in bread formulation GF increased its protein content by 14,68%, ash content – more than 2 times. The addition of FF neutralized the specific flavor and taste of the barnyard grass, influenced the form-holding ability of the semi-finished product: during baking the product was not blurred, the baked bread had an elastic baked crumb with uniform porosity, cracks and explosions were absent on the crust. As a result of the addition of GF and FF the prototype acquired a rich color of crust and crumb, a pleasant aroma reminiscent of rye bread. A sample of bread containing 15% GF and 5% FF after 72 h of storage had the lowest crumbiness index – 3,59% by weight of bread crumb and the highest rate of swelling – 154,5%, better than other samples retained consumer qualities: taste and aroma of the product has not changed, the softness of the crumb decreased slightly. Introduction of GF instead of part wheat in the bread formulation helps to increase the duration of the shelf life of the product, which allows us to recommend the use of barnyard grass flour in production of bakery products.

Exogenous jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) can have an important effect on rice allelopathy. Currently, the role of endogenous JA and SA on rice-barnyard grass interaction is largely unknown. In this study, the levels of JA and SA in tissues and their correlation to rice allelochemicals inducing with barnyard grass are analyzed. Rice allelochemicals production was enhanced by coexistence with barnyard grass and allelochemicals of the allelopathic variety, PI312777 were generally higher than those of non-allelopathic variety, Liaojing9. Furthermore, JA contents of two rice varieties were generally greater in roots than in shoots, and differed clearly with tested times. The SA levels of PI312777 were generally higher than those of Liaojing9 in shoots but opposite trend in roots. The contents of total allelochemicals correlated positively with SA (Pearson correlation, r = 0.91, P < 0.001). These results indicate that as the phytohormones, JA and SA play a provable role in chemical communication between rice and barnyard grass and participate in rice-barnyard grass allelopathic interaction. Future studies should determine the signal molecules in root exudates of barnyard grass and their functions.

A laboratory study was conducted to assess the herbicidal potential of root exudates of three rice cultivars (ADT-36, BPT and IR-20) against germination and growth of common crop field weed, barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli L.). Various concentrations (5, 10, 15 and 20%) of root exudates were prepared from the underground part of rice cultivars from the postharvest rice fields. The studies revealed that all the three rice cultivars were exhibited significant inhibition on growth and development of weed species. Among the rice cultivars, ADT-36 exhibited the greatest inhibition on the seed germination (86%), seedling growth(83%), dry weight (81%) of barnyard cross than BPT and ADT-36. The percentage of inhibition on concentration depends. The order of inhibition of the rice cultivars was ADT-36 > BPT > IR-20 on barnyard grass.

Rice has been subjected to a great deal of stress during its brief existence, but it nevertheless ranked first among cereal crops in terms of demand and productivity. Weeds are characterized as one of the major biotic stresses by many researchers. This research aims to determine the most potential allelopathic rice variety among selected rice accessions. For obtaining preeminent varieties, seventeen rice genotypes were collected from Bangladesh and Malaysia. Two prevalent procedures, relay seeding and the sandwich technique were employed to screen the seventeen rice (donor) accessions against barnyard grass (tested plant). In both approaches, only the BR17 variety demonstrated substantial inhibition of germination percentage, root length, and dry matter of barnyard grass. The rice variety BR17 exclusively took the zenith position, and it inhibited the development of barnyard grass by more than 40–41% on an average. BR17 is originated from KN-1B-361-1-8-6-10 (Indonesia) and developed by the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur, Bangladesh in 1985, having a high yielding capacity of more than 6 t/ha. Our study suggested that the usage of the allelopathy-weed inverse relationship to treat the weed problem can be a fantastic choice in the twenty-first century.
