Toluene is a colorless and aromatic oily liquid primarily used in the petrochemical and polymer processing industries and has been used in this study as the target compound. Continuous experiments were performed in a biofilter on a laboratory scale, followed by a membrane reactor to monitor toluene as one single contaminant. This bioreactor device included a reactor with a packed bed and a membrane array. Pearl millet stacks and berl saddles have been used as packing material for the development of the attached microorganism. Toluene was efficiently treated, with toluene effluent concentrations held at less than 0.4 g m-3 and a Total Removal Efficiency (TRE) of more than 96 % achieved when fluctuating loads were faced by the packed bed reactor. The combined packed bed reactor system had a maximum RE of 93.8 g m -3 h -1 , which was higher than the one obtained with the packed bed reactor alone. In this work the influences on gas membrane separation were also explored in the combined bioreactor and membrane fouling.

Available data and correlations for non ideal flow in liquid-solid fixed beds are summarized and reviewed with focus on irregular-shaped particles as packing material. The reason is that in many industrial applications (adsorption, ion exchange, catalysis, etc.) the particles used are of irregular shape while the vast majority of available data on dispersion and non ideal flow is on non-porous spherical or other ordered-shaped particles (saddles, rings, cylinders, tablets, etc.). In the same time, dispersion plays an important part, for example, in reactant and product transport in packed bed reactors, in adsorption, leaching, etc. In the present review all available correlations and data for liquid-solid fixed beds packed with irregular-shaped particles are collected for the prediction of the dispersion coefficients over a wide range of practical values particle Reynolds number. For the current review, 198 experimental points used and 6 Ped – Rep correlations are presented, all derived for irregular-shaped particles.

This study addresses the challenges a dissolving-grade pulp mill in Canada faced in 2014 in meeting its total reduced sulfur (TRS) gas emission limit. These emissions from the recovery boiler exit are controlled by passing the boiler exit gas through a TRS scrubber system. The mill employs a cyclonic direct contact evaporator to concentrate black liquor to firing solids content. The off-gases from the direct contact evaporator flow to the effluent gas control system that consists of a venturi scrubber, a packed bed scrubber, and a heat recovery unit. Emissions of TRS greater than the regulated limit of 15 ppm were observed for a 4-month period in 2014. The level of emissions measured during this period was significantly higher than about 12 ppm, the expected average value based on historic experience. The problem persisted from mid-June 2014 until the annual mill shutdown in October 2014. The main TRS components detected and the performance of the Teller scrubber in capturing them are examined. Other potential causes for these emissions are identified, including mechanical problems such as broken packing in the TRS packed bed scrubber, broken baffle plates in the scrubber, and cyclone evaporator leaks causing air ingress. Repairs were carried out during the mill shutdown, which eliminated the TRS emissions problem.
