Micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) with the use of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to determine some physicochemical parameters of six biogenic amines: adrenaline, dopamine, octopamine, histamine, 2-phenylethylamine, and tyramine. In this paper, an influence of surfactant’s concentration and pH of the micellar mobile phase on the retention of the tested substances was examined. To determine the influence of surfactant’s concentration on the retention of the tested amines, buffered solutions (at pH 7.4) of ionic surfactant—sodium dodecyl sulfate SDS (at different concentrations) with acetonitrile as an organic modifier (0.8/0.2 v/v) were used as the micellar mobile phases. To determine the influence of pH of the micellar mobile phase on the retention, mobile phases contained buffered solutions (at different pH values) of sodium dodecyl sulfate SDS (at 0.1 M) with acetonitrile (0.8/0.2 v/v). The inverse of value of retention factor () versus concentration of micelles () relationships were examined. Other physicochemical parameters of solutes such as an association constant analyte—micelle ()—and partition coefficient of analyte between stationary phase and water (hydrophobicity descriptor) () were determined by the use of Foley’s equation.

Hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) was employed to investigate chromatographic behavior of selected flavonoids from their different subgroups differing in polarity. Chromatographic measurements were performed on two different HILIC columns: unmodified silica (Atlantis-HILIC) and zwitterionic sulfoalkylbetaine (SeQuant ZIC-HILIC). Separation parameters such as content and type of organic modifier were studied. On ZIC column retention factors were observed to be inversely proportional to the buffer content in the mobile phase, which is the typical partitioning mechanism. In the case of bare silica column more or less apparent dual retention mechanism was observed, depending on the water component content in the mobile phase. ZIC-HILIC showed better selectivity (in comparison to silica column) with the detection limit of 0.01 mg/L (only for rutin was 0.05 mg/L). Finally, this chromatographic procedure was validated and applied for the determination of some flavonoids inGenista tinctoriaL. extract.

By the application of the Log ? pair linearity rule and the Proportionality rule to the previously published log ? values for 27 compounds, obtained on diol-silica columns with acetonitrile, methanol and tetrahydrofuran as modifiers, the existence of common RPP scales was established. The obtained correlation coefficients of the linear function log k = f(RPP) were better than 0.9900 for 26 compounds in the first, 21 in the second and 20 in the third case. In addition, in the case of the two first modifiers a linear correlation between the obtained RPP values and mol % of modifier in the mobile phase was found. On the basis of this, the following simple linear function: log k= f(mol % of modifier) was proposed as a criterion for log k values judgment in practical work. A linear correlation was also established between intercept and slope of the function, in spite of the fact that the investigated compounds essentially differ in their descriptors.
