An efficient, experimentally simple, and convenient procedure for the C–O coupling of organic halides with phenols and alcohols in a PEG1000-DAIL[CdCl3]–toluene temperature-dependent biphasic system has been developed. The product can be easily isolated by a simple decantation, and the catalytic system can be recycled and reused without loss of catalytic activity.

The ionic liquid 1,3-dihexylimidazolium nitrate shows temperature-dependent phase behavior of the UCST-type. The biphasic system efficiently separates rare earths from 1st row transition metals, relevant for recycling of batteries (La/Ni) and permanent magnets (Sm/Co).

Oxidation of androsta-3,5- and 4,6-dienes by the biphasic system potassium permanganate:copper sulfate afforded the 3α,4α-epoxy-5α-hydroxy-6-ketone and the 5α,6α-epoxy-4β-hydroxy-7-ketone respectively as the major products whilst the androsta-3,5-dien-7-one and androsta-4,6-dien-3-one gave the 3α,4α- and 6α,7α-epoxides as the major products.
