Complexation copper with amine provides an effective strategy for fixation copper in wood, while hydrophobic modification improves the dimensional stability of wood. Thus, a combination of complexation and hydrophobization is expected to enhance the efficiency of copper-based biocides. In this study, hydrophobic hybrid silica gel containing copper amine complexes (MACu) was prepared through an in situ sol-gel process in wood using methyltriethoxysilane (MTES), 3-amino-propyltriethoxysilane (APTES), and copper chloride. The resistance to growth of molds for MACu modified wood (Populus tomentosa) was measured according to ASTM D3273-16. A leaching resistance test was carried out in accordance with AWPA E11-16. The results showed that only Aspergillus niger covered the surface of untreated wood blocks and no mold grew on the MACu surface even after the leaching test. MACu xerogel and MACu wood were further characterized by SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS. A possible schematic diagram of the reaction mechanism was proposed to explain the high-efficiency anti-mold performance of MACu wood.

ABSTRACTHybrid materials based on polysiloxanes and metal oxides (SiO2, TiO2, ZrO2) were prepared by hydrosilation of allyl acetoacetate (AAA) modified metal alkoxides (M(OR)4; M = Ti, Zr; R = ethyl, isopropyl) or vinyl triethoxysilane with poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-hydrosiloxane) (PDMS-co-PMHS). The obtained compounds acted as single-source precursors in the sol-gel process. Various spectroscopic methods showed the complete functionalization of the polysiloxane chains with the complexes. When alcohols were used as solvents in the sol-gel process, hybrid nanoparticles were obtained, as observed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and spectroscopic methods such as NMR and FT-IR.

In this study novel organic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposites were synthesized from modified cellulose acetate propionate (MCAP) via sol-gel reaction at ambient temperature. The inorganic phase was introduced in situ by hydrolysis-condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in different concentrations, under acid catalysis, in the presence of organic polymer dissolved in acetone. The chemical modification of CAP was monitored by infrared spectroscopy (IR). The nanocomposites structure was characterized by IR analysis and solid state29Si NMR studies. The spectral data revealed that organic and inorganic phases are linked through covalent bound. Surface morphology of the samples and the degree of dispersion of inorganic phase in the polymer matrix were investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The actual incorporation of the inorganic component into the hybrid nanocomposites was deducted from the residual weight according to thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).

ABSTRACTThe objective of this paper is to review various solid state NMR techniques that have been, or can be used for the structural characterization of siloxane—oxide hybrid systems prepared by sol-gel process, and to discuss the type of information they provide, as well as their limitations. More precisely, this paper focuses on NMR techniques to probe and quantify the different types of oxo-bridges (M–O–M of oxide network, Si–O–Si of siloxane chains and Si–O–M siloxane–MxOy interface) in siloxane-oxide nanocomposites prepared through hydrolysis and condensation of organosilanes and M(OR)n alkoxides. In addition the influence of the functionality of the silicon alkoxides and the nature of the MxOy oxides on the extent of the Si-O-M interface will be examined.
