A group of polysaccharides, called galactomannans I, were precipitated as their insoluble copper complexes from aqueous solutions of the crude polysaccharides obtained from each of the organisms designated in the title. The five galactomannans I were homogeneous under conditions of electrophoresis and ultracentrifugation and had high positive specific rotations. The major constituent monosaccharide was D-mannose; amounts of D-galactose ranged from nil for the polysaccharide from T. rubrum to 13% for that from T. schönleinii. Methylation and hydrolysis of the five galactomannans I yielded varying amounts of the following: 2,3,5,6-tetra-O-methyl-D-galactose (not present in the products from T. rubrum), 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-methyl-D-mannose, 2,3,4-tri-O-methyl-D-mannose, 2,4,6-tri-O-methyl-D-mannose, 3,4-di-O-methyl-D-mannose, and 3,5-di-O-methyl-D-mannose. Periodate oxidation results agreed with the methylation studies. The gross structural features of each galactomannan I appear to be the same, namely, a basic chain of 1 → 6 linked α-D-mannopyranose units for approximately every 22 of which there is a 1 → 3 linked α-D-mannopyranose residue. Branch points occur along the 1 → 6 linked chain at the C2 positions of the D-mannopyranose units and once in every 45 units at the C2 position of a 1 → 6 linked D-mannofuranose residue. The D-galactose in the polysaccharides is present exclusively as non-reducing terminal furanose units; non-reducing terminal units of D-mannopyranose are also present. The variations in the identities and relative amounts of the non-reducing terminal units were the only apparent differences in the gross structural features within this group of polysaccharides.

A series of copper complexes (3–6) stabilized by 1,2,3-triazole-tethered N-heterocyclic carbene ligands have been prepared via simple reaction of imidazolium salts with copper powder in good yields. The structures of bi- and trinuclear copper complexes were fully characterized by NMR, elemental analysis (EA), and X-ray crystallography. In particular, [Cu2(L2)2](PF6)2 (3) and [Cu2(L3)2](PF6)2 (4) were dinuclear copper complexes. Complexes [Cu3(L4)2](PF6)3 (5) and [Cu3(L5)2](PF6)3 (6) consist of a triangular Cu3 core. These structures vary depending on the imidazolium backbone and N substituents. The copper–NHC complexes tested are highly active for the Cu-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction in an air atmosphere at room temperature in a CH3CN solution. Complex 4 is the most efficient catalyst among these polynuclear complexes in an air atmosphere at room temperature.

The Impact

In this study, the water-soluble green food colorant copper complexes of chlorophyllins, E141ii, as one of the most popular within the food industry was investigated. First, the spectroscopic parameters, absorbance maximum, λmax-vis, and molar absorptivities, ε, of E141ii dye were determined. The impact of the presence of aspartame, citric acid and vitamin C on the change in the positions of the absorbance maximum and change of its intensity in the visible range of the E141ii spectra also was investigated. Recorded absorption spectra was show that this dye had two absorbance maxima. The average molar absorptivities were calculated. These values of molar absorptivities were later used to quantify the unknown dye concentration in the analyzed food samples. It was found that the use of additives (vitamin C, citric acid and aspartame) does not cause a change in the positions of the absorbance maximum and change of its intensity in the visible range of the E141ii spectra. Therefore, it can be concluded that it is possible to quantify the E141ii by UV-Vis spectrophotometric method in the presence of these additives. Based on determined spectroscopic parameters, the dye concentration was calculated in green rubber candy colored with E141ii.

The synthesis of four new water-soluble bis(thiosemicarbazone) ligands and their copper(ii) complexes is presented and their potential to be new ligands for copper radiopharmaceuticals is discussed. The ligands and complexes have been characterized by a combination of NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. The electrochemical behaviour of two of the copper(ii) complexes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and revealed that both complexes exhibited a quasi-reversible redox process attributed to a CuII/CuI process. Two of the new ligands were radiolabelled with positron-emitting 64Cu with a view to assessing their potential as ligands that bind radioactive copper isotopes for application in diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals. The cellular uptake of the copper complexes was investigated in SH-SY5Y cells.
