Printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHEs) have the characteristics of high temperature and high pressure resistance, as well as compact structure, so they are widely used in the supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton cycle. In order to fully study the heat transfer process of the Z-type PCHE, a numerical model of traditional Z-type PCHE was established and the accuracy of the model was verified. On this basis, a new type of spiral PCHE (S-ZPCHE) is proposed in this paper. The segmental design method was used to compare the pressure changes under 5 different spiral angles, and it was found that increasing the spiral angle θ of the spiral structure will reduce the pressure drop of the fluid. The effects of different spiral angles on the thermal-hydraulic performance of S-ZPCHE were compared. The results show that the pressure loss of fluid is greatly reduced, while the heat transfer performance is slightly reduced, and it was concluded that the spiral angle of 20° is optimal. The local fluid flow states of the original structure and the optimal structure were compared to analyze the reason for the pressure drop reduction effect of the optimal structure. Finally, the performance of the optimal structure was analyzed under variable working conditions. The results show that the effect of reducing pressure loss of the new S-ZPCHE is more obvious in the low Reynolds number region.

A Comparative Numerical Study on Two-Phase Boiling Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in the Microchannel Heat Sink With Different Manifold Arrangements

Abstract The manifold microchannel (MMC) heat sink system has been widely used in high-heat-flux chip thermal management due to its high surface-to-volume ratio. Two-phase, three-dimensional numerical methods for subcooled flow boiling have been developed using a self-programming solver based on OpenFOAM. Four different types of manifold arrangements (Z-type, C-type, H-type and U-type) have been investigated at a fixed operational condition. The numerical results evaluate the effects of flow maldistribution caused by different manifold configurations. Before simulating the two-phase boiling flow in MIMC metamodels, single-phase liquid flow fields are performed at first to compare the flow maldistribution in microchannels. It can be concluded from the flow patterns that H-type and U-type manifolds provide a more even and a lower microchannel void fraction, which is conducive to improving the temperature uniformity and decreasing the effective thermal resistance. The simulation results also show that the wall temperature difference of H-type (0.471 K) is only about 10% of the Z-type (4.683 K). In addition, the U-type manifold configuration show the lowest average pressure drop at the inlet and outlet of the MIMC metamodel domain. However, H-type manifold also shows an impressive 59.9% decrease in pressure loss. Results indicate that both the H-type and the U-type manifolds for flow boiling in microchannels are recommended due to their better heat transfer performance and lower pressure drop when compared with Z-type and C-type.

The present study focuses on the numerical study of thermal and flow characteristics in a microchannel heat sink with alternating trapezoidal cavities in sidewall (MTCS). The effects of flow rate and heat flux on friction factor and Nusselt are presented. The results showed considerable improvement heat transfer performance micro channel heat sink with alternating trapezoidal cavities in sidewall with an acceptable pressure drop. The heat transfer rate has improved in the cavity area due the greater fluid mixing in fluid vortices and thermal boundary layer disruption. The slipping over the reentrant cavities and pressure gain reduces pressure drop appears as the reason behind of only minor pressure drop due to the cavities.

Effectiveness of the microchannel heat sink cooled by nanofluids with various particle volume fractions is investigated numerically using the latest theoretical models for conductivity and viscosity of the nanofluids. Both laminar and turbulent flows are considered in this research. The model of conductivity used in this research accounts for the fundamental role of Brownian motion of the nanoparticles which is in good agreement with the experimental data. The changes in viscosity of the nanofluid due to temperature variation are considered also. Final results are compared with the experimental measurements for heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in microchannel. Enhancement in heat transfer is achieved for laminar flow with increasing of volume fraction of Al2O3 nanoparticles. But for turbulent flow an enhancement of heat removal was not seen and using higher volume fractions of nanoparticles increases the maximum substrate temperature. Pressure drop is increased with using nanofluids because of the augmentation in the viscosity and this increase is more noticeable in higher Reynolds numbers.

A numerical study is performed to analyze steady laminar forced convection in a channel filled with a fluid-saturated porous medium and containing discrete heat sources on the bottom wall. Hydrodynamic and heat transfer results are reported for two configurations: (1) a fully porous channel, and (2) a partially porous channel, which contains porous layers above the heat sources and is nonporous elsewhere. The flow in the porous medium is modeled using the Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy model. Heat transfer rates and pressure drop are evaluated for wide ranges of Darcy and Reynolds numbers. Detailed results of the evolution of the hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layers are also provided. The results indicate that as the Darcy number decreases, a significant increase in heat transfer is obtained, especially at the leading edge of each heat source. For fixed Reynolds number, the length-averaged Nusselt number reaches an asymptotic value in the Darcian regime. In the partially porous channel, it is found that when the width of the heat source and the spacing between the porous layers are of the same magnitude as the channel height, the heat transfer enhancement is almost the same as in the fully porous channel while the pressure drop is significantly lower. These results suggest that the partially porous channel configuration is a potentially attractive heat transfer augmentation technique for electronic equipment cooling, an end that motivated this study.
