Abstract This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effect of novel 3D-organocopper supramolecular coordination polymers (SCPs) on the invasive potential of HepG2 cells. Chemoprevention could represent an important means to inhibit the process of hepatocarcinogenesis. The inhibitory effect of an SCP compound on the proliferation of HepG2 hepatoma cells was evaluated by cell vibility assay. DNA ladder bands were observed by DNA agarose gel electrophoresis. The influence of the SCP compound on phosphorylated ERK1/2, Bcl-2, and β-catenin protein expression of HepG2 cells was analyzed by Western blot. The SCP compound exerted an inhibitory effect on HepG2 cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. This inhibitory effect was confirmed by examination of cell morphology and DNA fragmentation. Furthermore, Western blot analysis revealed that phosphorylated ERK1/2 and β-catenin protein expression was inhibited after 24 h of treatment with the SCP compound, and that this event was associated with decreased Bcl-2 expression. We concluded that SCP can effectively inhibit the invasive potential of the ERK signaling pathway in HepG2 cells by altering apoptosis and by inhibiting Bcl-2 and β-catenin, which may play a significant role in this process.

New crystalline coordination-polymers are obtained under conditions in which distinct metal ion coordination, hydrogen-bonding and p-p stacking subprograms are involved in independent binding events of ureidopyridyl ligands 1 and 2 by silver hexafluorophosphate or silver triflate. The geometrical information contained in the structure of the ligands 1 and 2 is fully exploited by the silver ion coordination and urea-self assembly or H-bond anion coordination templating features in an independent way. The resulted linear or angular sequences may serve to use the information stored in molecular components that could be read out by synergistic and sequential non-covalent subprograms. It results in linear or tubular supramolecular coordination polymers constructed in a bottom-up strategy.

Two luminescent functionalised supramolecular coordination polymers, namely, [Zn(TPDC-2CH3)(H2O)2]·H2O (1) and [Cd(TPDC-2CH3)(H2O)4]·H2O (2), were successfully synthesised by the reaction of 2′,5′-dimethyl-[1,1′:4′,1″-terphenyl]-4,4″-dicarboxylic acid (H2TPDC-2CH3) with Zn2+ and Cd2+ ions, respectively. X-Ray crystallographic analysis reveals that both compounds 1 and 2 exhibit fascinating 3D supramolecular networks, in which metal ions are linked by ligands to form a 1D chain which further extends to a 3D structure through the interaction of hydrogen bonding. The use of 1 and 2 as luminescent sensors for the optical detection of metal ions: Na+, K+, Hg2+, Ag+, Ca2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Fe3+, Fe2+, In3+, Bi3+, and Cr3+ was carried out in aqueous solution, and the results indicated that compound 1 could effectively detect Hg2+ ions among various cations at room temperature, with a detection limit of 3.6 × 10−15 M.
