Using a new Hamiltonian of interaction we have calculated the cohesive energy in three-dimensional structures. We have found the news dependences of this energy on the distance between the atoms. The obtained results are in a good agreement with experimental data in ionic, covalent and noble gases crystals. The coupling constant γ between the interacting field and the atoms is somewhat smaller than unity in ionic crystals and is some larger than unity in covalent and noble gases crystals. The formulae found by us are general and may be applied, also, to the other types of interactions, for example, gravitational interactions.

Resonance Reflection

Resonance reflection of light from the ordered arrays of silicon nanopillars (Si NP) was investigated. The height of Si NP was 450 nm. The effect of Si NP oxidation in concentrated nitric acid on the position of resonances in reflection spectra was studied. A weak influence of the additional polymeric coating on the characteristics of reflection from the structures was proven. It is established on the basis of the results of experimental investigation and direct numerical modeling by means of three-dimensional finite difference time domain algorithm (3D FDTD) that the dependence of the resonant wavelength for Si NP on the diameter of Si NP is a linear function with nonzero displacement depending on the pitch.

AbstractOrdered arrays of pores in Si provided the first (two dimensional) photonic crystals with bandgaps in the μm region. The paper explores the potential of pore etching for two- and threedimensional photonic crystals in GaAs, InP, and GaP. A striking feature of pore etching in III-V semiconductors is the strong tendency to self-organization and pattern formation. As an example, self-organized well-defined pore lattices (a = 100 nm – 1 μm) can be made in InP. All materials show self organized diameter oscillations, often synchronized over large distances between pores. Extremely strong diameter oscillations are observed in GaAs. Pores in all materials tend to grow in <111> directions, but can be induced to grow in the direction of current flow, too. These features can be used to produce two- and three dimensional photonic crystals. The latter goal might be achieved by switching periodically between different pore morphologies with depth, or by modulating the diameter with depth - always helped by the tendency to self organization. Self organization, however, will not lead to perfect crystal structures; lithographically defined nucleation is needed and has been tried. First results show that there are pronounced differences to what is known from Si. While the production of externally defined photonic crystals in the sub μm region appears to be feasible, the strong tendency to self organization must be taken into account by matching internal time and length scales to the desired external ones.

Cysts of Entamoeba Invadens contain large ordered arrays of closely packed helices which absorb strongly in the ultraviolet. The helices consist of small, approximately spherical particles about 250Å in diameter. Several lines of evidence have indicated that they may be ribosomes. We shall refer to these particles as ribosomes in this paper.DeRosier and Klug (1) have demonstrated that it is possible to reconstruct a three dimensional object from two dimensional projected images, i.e. micrographs, provided that sufficient views, of individual molecules are available. A single view (micrograph) of one ribosomal helix provides many views of individual ribosomes.
