Three-component cyclocondensation of β-naphthol, aldehydes, and 5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione (dimedone) was catalyzed efficiently by ruthenium chloride hydrate under mild reaction conditions to afford 12-aryl or alkyl-8,9,10,12-tetrahydrobenzo[a]xanthen-11-one derivatives in good to excellent yields.

The one-pot domino Knoevenagel-type condensation/Michael reaction of aromatic, heteroaromatic and aliphatic aldehydes with 4-hydroxycoumarin in aqueous media in the presence of ruthenium salt as homogeneous catalyst was investigated. It was found that 5 mol% of RuCl3.nH2O catalyzes biscoumarin synthesis in high yields (70-95%) under optimised, mild, green and environmentally benign reaction conditions in short times (25-35min).

A new method for the synthesis of aldol products is described. The reaction of aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes with 1-(thiophen-2-yl)ethanone in the presence of ruthenium chloride hydrate combined with ligand provided the related aldol adducts, in a short time at room temperature in good yields (77–84%).

A convenient method for the synthesis of 2-arylbenzothiazoles from condensation of aromatic/heteroaromatic aldehydes with 2-aminothiophenol has been developed using inexpensive, green and reusable solid acids – silica sulfuric acid (SSA), oxalic acid or AlCl3·6H2O as efficient catalysts. The reactions occurred under mild conditions to afford the corresponding 2-arylbenzothiazoles in good to excellent yields.
