AbstractLet P(r, θ) be the two-dimensional Poisson kernel in the unit disc D. It is proved that there exists a special sequence {ak} of points of D which is non-tangentially dense for ∂D and such that any function on ∂D can be expanded in series of P(|ak|, (·)–arg ak) with coefficients depending continuously on f in various classes of functions. The result is used to solve a Cauchy-type problem for Δu = μ, where μ is a measure supported on {ak}.

Abstract Series of polyradical systems having a preponderance of common eigenvalues (strongly sub-spectral) are identified, and their structural relationships studied. A framework for the analysis and molecular modeling of graphite-related polymers is provided by an infinite two-dimensional mapping. Some analytical expressions are derived. Aryl polyradical dendrimers form numerous strongly sub-spectral sets. Potential conductive/ferromagnetic properties are indicated. Collections of subspectral structures (molecular graphs) and their eigenvalues are tabulated for the first time.

This research evaluates a recently developed comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography 2D GC coupled with a time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer for the potential separation of 209 PCB congeners, using a sequence of 1D and 2D chromatographic modes. In two consecutive chromatographic runs, using a 40 m, Rtx-PCB column, and a 1 m DB-17 column, connected in series, 196 PCB congeners are distinguished, including 43 of the 46 pentachlorobiphenyl isomers. Some of the chlorinated biphenyls that could not be resolved chromatographically are resolved with the use of the “ortho effect,” which distinguishes PCB isomers having 2,2′-; and 2,2′6- chlorine substitution from those isomers without these substitutions. The result of this work falls short of our goal of separating all 209 PCB congeners but still provides investigators with a new tool for a better front-end separation of PCB-specific congeners, and potentially, for use in acquisition of more accurate data.

Host-seeking female Tabanus nigrovittatus Macquart primarily use visual cues to locate hosts and host mimics. The importance of various attributes of patterns to this behavior was examined in the field using black and white two-dimensional panels. Panels with a square, circle, or star of equal size were equally attractive as were panels with stars with increasingly complex edges. In a series of panels with black circles of increasing size, attraction increased as the size of the circles increased. High contour density was not important in series of panels with increasing size and decreasing number of patterns (squares or circles), and large patterns with simple edges were most attractive. Both light objects against a dark background and dark objects against a light background were highly attractive. The response of flies to objects with stripes indicated that stripes decreased attraction, possibly as a result of shape disruption. These results indicate that solid, compact, large objects with high contrast against the background were the most attractive to host-seeking flies and that fine pattern detail was not important.

The external rotor doubly salient permanent magnet (DSPM) generator with PM rotor tooth is designed. The two-dimensional model of the generator is analyzed by finite element method. Without changing the structure of generator, the magnet circuit is kept in the saturated state as soon as possible by paralleling capacitor besides the windings. By comparing the two kinds of rectifier topology structure, the results show that the average electromagnetic torque and the output voltage is significantly enhanced in series multiple rectifier circuit. The torque ripple of generator can be effectively suppressed in the case of load, which has a certain guiding significance for improving the output performance of the generator.

AbstractIn the two-dimensional theory of diffraction by smooth curves there are certain canonical problems that can be solved explicitly in series form. The series converge slowly at short wavelengths but they can be transformed by Watson's transformation into another form (the residue series or creeping-mode expansion) which has been much used in shadow regions. It is found that throughout the shadow region the first few terms of the residue series are exponentially small and decrease rapidly, and these have often been used as an estimate of the wave potential without further justification. Leppington's recent work on the shadow of an ellipse has shown, however, that in part of the shadow some of the later terms of the residue series are exponentially large. In other words, the complete residue series in part of the shadow is even more slowly convergent than the original series. In the present paper the Watson transformation is re-examined in the light of this result. The original series is expressed as the sum of a finite number of terms of the residue series and of a remainder. It is shown that throughout the shadow the remainder is at short wavelengths asymptotically of smaller order than the last term retained in the finite residue series. It follows that the residue series (which is a convergent infinite series) is also an asymptotic series, and this fact is sufficient to justify most of the usual applications. The proof is given in detail for the circle and in outline for the ellipse; it makes use of the theory of conformal mapping.
