ABSTRACTThis works addresses the question of the direct attachment of organic molecules on Si(111) by an electrochemical method. Anodic grafting of -OR group is demonstrated by in-situ STM and the LDOS characterized. The grafting of aryl groups, by reduction of aryl diazonium salts in aqueous solution, is also described. This approach leads to well ordered and close-packed thin molecular films with various functionality. Different chemical and structural characterizations conclude to a Si-C binding, between the Si surface and aryl groups. The stability of films is also investigated.

ABSTRACTIn situ Raman scattering studies of the high-frequency carbon intralayer modes in graphite-H2SO4 have been carried out during the electrochemical intercalation of graphite in sulfuric acid. The data show that within an optical depth of ∼ 200 Å the entire c-face undergoes a sudden transition to the next lower stage (n−1) at the moment when the bulk has just completed forming stage n. Raman data collected in the “overcharge” and “overoxidation” regimes of the electrochemical synthesis indicate rapid shifting of the peaks during these times, indicating a significant increase in the oxidation of the carbon layers.

Nanocomposites based on layered silicate organically modified montmorillonite (Cloisite 20A) and acrylic comonomers (butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate) were prepared by simple “in situ” batch emulsion polymerization method. The particle size and zeta potential of the emulsions were analyzed. The structural characterizations of the nanocomposites were performed by FTIR, thermal behaviors of the films were investigated by DSC, mechanical properties of the films were tested by DMA and intercalation success was viewed by XRD. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were improved significantly especially at the temperatures above Tg. The ultrasonication process was found to be useful for increasing the homogeneity of the emulsions and intercalation success. The obtained nanocomposite emulsions were applied on garment leathers in a finishing formulation as aqueous binders sharing good film forming ability and elasticity.
