Background: Approximately 25–45% of schwannomas are typically slow-growing, encapsulated, and noninvasive tumors that occur in the head-and-neck region where they rarely involve the retropharyngeal space. Here, we report deep-seated benign plexiform schwannoma located in the retropharyngeal C2-C5 region excised utilizing the Smith-Robinson approach. Case Description: A 30-year-old male presented with dysphagia and impaired phonation attributed to an MR documented C2-C5 retropharyngeal schwannomas. On examination, the lesion was soft, deep seated, and extended more toward the right side of the neck. Utilizing a right-sided Smith-Robinson’s approach, it was successfully removed. The histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of a plexiform schwannoma. Conclusion: Retropharyngeal benign plexiform schwannomas are rare causes of dysphagia/impaired phonation in the cervical spine. MR studies best document the size and extent of these tumors which may be readily resected utilizing a Smith-Robinson approach.

ABSTRACTAn 18-year-old female presented with a swelling on the lower lip, which was insidious in onset and gradually progressive. The mass was completely excised under local anaesthesia. Complete histopathologic and immunohistochemical studies were conducted. The Antoni A areas were found along with typical verocay bodies composed of palisading nuclei and surrounding spaces filled with eosinophilic filaments. No necrosis was noted and there were no atypical mitotic figures. In the Antoni B region, a closely textured matrix with areas of edema, myxomatous changes, cystic degeneration and dilated vessels were noted. On the basis of the histopathologic and immunohistochemical staining with S-100 protein, a diagnosis of plexiform schwannoma was made and has been reported in this study. The post-operative view confirmed complete recovery after 6 weeks of surgery. This is a rare case with the tumour located in the lower lip, as very few cases have been reported in literature and it may be the first one reported from India.

Plexiform schwannoma mainly presented as an asymptomatic nodule located on the head, neck, or upper extremities. The presentation of this tumor on the dorsum of the foot is very rare. Herein, we report a rare case of pretty large plexiform schwannoma on the toe of a male patient.

Electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis (EDXA) are found to be very useful tools for identification of etiologic agents in pneumoconiosis or interstitial pulmonary disorders. Pulmonary interstitial fibrosis and granulomatosis are frequently associated with occupational and environmental pollution. Numerous reports of pneumoconiosis in various occupations such as coal and gold miners are presented in the literature. However, there is no known documented case of pulmonary changes in workers in the sandpaper industry. This study reports a rare case of pulmonary granulomatosis containing deposits from abrasives of sandpaper diagnosed by using EDXA.
