Objective:To assess the relationship between knee varus–valgus motion and functional ability, and the impact of knee varus–valgus motion on the relationship between muscle strength and functional ability in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee.Methods:Sixty-three patients with knee OA were tested. Varus–valgus motion was assessed by optoelectronic recording and three-dimensional motion analysis. Functional ability was assessed by observation, using a 100 m walking test, a Get Up and Go test, and WOMAC questionnaire. Muscle strength was measured by a computer-driven isokinetic dynamometer. Regression analyses were performed to assess the relationships between varus–valgus motion and functional ability, and to assess the impact of varus–valgus motion on the relationship between muscle strength and functional ability.Results:In patients with high varus–valgus range of motion, muscle weakness was associated with a stronger reduction in functional ability (ie, longer walking time and Get Up and Go time) than in patients with low varus–valgus range of motion. A pronounced varus position and a difference between the left and right knees in varus–valgus position were related with reduced functional ability.Conclusions:In patients with knee OA with high varus–valgus range of motion, muscle weakness has a stronger impact on functional ability than in patients with low varus–valgus range of motion. Patients with knee OA with more pronounced varus knees during walking show a stronger reduction in functional ability than patients with less pronounced varus knees or with valgus knees.

The aging process affects the skeletal muscle structure and disability of the musculoskeletal system which resulted in limited and slowed motion. One characteristic of the aging process is a decrease in muscle strength. Muscle strength affects almost all daily activity. Decreased muscle strength can lead to limitations in daily activities, independence and quality of life. This study aims to determine the relationship between handgrip muscles’ strength and level of functional ability among elderly women in Tista, Kerambitan Tabanan. To assess the strength of the relationship and assess the direction of the relationship between the variables. The research design was used cross sectional study with Simple Random Sampling and got 73 samples. The strength of handgrip muscles was measured using Hand-grip dynamometer, while the functional independence level was assessed by Intermediate Activity Daily Living (IADL) questionnaire interview. Result of research by using Spearman correlation test got value P = 0,000 (P <0,05) and Coefficient correlation value equal to 0,489 indicate that there is a significant correlation between handgrip muscles’ strength with functional ability independence level, this relation is positive and medium. In conculsion that handgrip muscles’s strength and level of  functional ability are positively correlated and medium. The stronger the muscle strength of the handgrip, the higher the level of functional ability independence and vice versa. Therefore, handgrip muscle’s strength can be used in identifying disabilities in the elderly. Keywords: elderly, handgrip muscles’ strength, functional capabilities, disability.

This study aimed to systematically review research investigating the association between hip muscle strength and dynamic knee valgus (DKV). Four databases (MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus) were searched for journal articles published from inception to October 2020. Seven studies investigating the association between hip muscle strength and DKV using a two-dimensional motion analysis system in healthy adults were included. The relationship between hip abductor muscle strength and DKV was negatively correlated in two studies, positively correlated in two studies, and not correlated in three studies. The DKV was associated with reduced hip extensor muscle strength in two studies and reduced hip external rotator muscle strength in two studies, while no correlation was found in three and five studies for each muscle group, respectively. The relationship between hip muscle strength, including abductors, extensors, and external rotators and DKV is conflicting. Considering the current literature limitations and variable methodological approaches used among studies, the clinical relevance of such findings should be interpreted cautiously. Therefore, future studies are recommended to measure the eccentric strength of hip muscles, resembling muscular movement during landing. Furthermore, high-demand and sufficiently challenging functional tasks revealing lower limb kinematic differences, such as cutting and jumping tasks, are recommended for measuring the DKV.

BACKGROUND: As the severity of dementia progresses over time, cognition and motor functions such as muscle strength, balance, and gait are disturbed, and they eventually increase the risk of fall in patients with dementia. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between the fall risk and cognition, motor function, functional ability, and depression in older adults with dementia. METHODS: Seventy-four older adults diagnosed with dementia were recruited. Clinical measurements included the Fall Risk Scale by Huh (FSH), Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-K), hand grip strength (HGS), Tinetti Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA), 10-m walk test (10-MWT), Korean version of the Modified Barthel Index (MBI-K), and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). RESUTLS: The MMSE-K was significantly correlated with the FSH, HGS, and the MBI-K, and FSH was significantly correlated with all of the other outcome measures. In particular, the MMSE-K, HGS, POMA, and the MBI-K were negatively correlated with fall history among the FHS sub-items. Additionally, the MMSE sub-item, attention/concentration was associated with the FSH, HGS, POMA, and the MBI-K. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that falling is significantly related to impaired cognition, reduced muscle strength, impaired balance, gait, and activities of daily living abilities, and depression in older adults with dementia.

ObjectiveIn aging populations, poor handgrip strength has been associated with physical disability and mortality. IGF1 is an important mediator of muscle growth and regeneration affecting muscle function. We studied the relationship between circulating levels of IGF1, its binding protein 3 (IGFBP3), and handgrip strength and physical performance in middle-aged- and oldest-old subjects.DesignCross-sectional analysis in two different cohorts composed of middle-aged- (n=672, mean 63.9±6.7 years) and oldest-old subjects (n=272, all 89 years).MethodsHandgrip strength, functional performance and ability, and serum levels of IGF1 and IGFBP3 were measured in all subjects and analyzed by linear regression for men and women separately.ResultsIGF1 and IGFBP3 levels declined with chronological age and were positively associated with handgrip strength in middle-aged- and oldest-old women (both, P<0.05), but not in men of either age group. Furthermore, higher serum levels of IGF1 were associated with slower walking speed in oldest-old men (P=0.012), and serum levels of IGFBP3 were positively associated with activities of daily living in the oldest-old women (P=0.002).ConclusionThe significant relationship between IGF1 levels and muscle strength found in women but not in men suggests a gender-specific influence of IGF1 on muscle strength. Further studies are necessary to test the relationship with physical performance.
