Pleopis schmackeri, a podonid cladoceran not previously recorded in the Mediterranean Sea, was found in the İskenderun Bay for the first time. The samples were collected seasonally during 2012–2015 in the coastal area of İskenderun Bay using a WP-2 zooplankton net (200 µm). Six cladoceran species were found in total, and Penilia avirostris, Pseudevadne tergestina and Evadne spinifera constituted the bulk of the population, while the contribution of P. schmackeri was very low. Although only a single individual was observed in July 2012, the abundance and frequency of P. schmackeri increased in the following years, attaining the abundance of 25.10 ind.m-3 in 2015. Thus, P. schmackeri could be considered as established in İskenderun Bay; however, it seems that it did not affect the distribution of other cladoceran species in the area up to now. P. schmackeri could have entered in İskenderun Bay either as Lessepsian migrant or by ballast waters of commercial ships.

Abstract. A coastal forecasting system was implemented to provide wind wave forecasts over the whole Mediterranean Sea area, and with the added capability to focus on selected coastal areas. The goal of the system was to achieve a representation of the small-scale coastal processes influencing the propagation of waves towards the coasts. The system was based on a chain of nested wave models and adopted the WAve Model (WAM) to analyse the large-scale, deep-sea propagation of waves; and the Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) to simulate waves in key coastal areas. Regional intermediate-scale WAM grids were introduced to bridge the gap between the large-scale and each coastal area. Even applying two consecutive nestings (Mediterranean grid → regional grid → coastal grid), a very high resolution was still required for the large scale WAM implementation in order to get a final resolution of about 400 m on the shores. In this study three regional areas in the Tyrrhenian Sea were selected, with a single coastal area embedded in each of them. The number of regional and coastal grids in the system could easily be modified without significantly affecting the efficiency of the system. The coastal system was tested in three Italian coastal regions in order to optimize the numerical parameters and to check the results in orographically complex zones for which wave records were available. Fifteen storm events in the period 2004–2009 were considered.

The LYONNAISE DES EAUX Company has been managing the sanitation amenities for the town of VALLAURIS GOLFE-JUAN (a summer population of 35.000) since 1974, with a three-fold target:firstly, to arrange for the collection and disposal of the sewage effluent under all circumstances, despite the influx of tourists and without causing any inconvenience to users, secondly,to safeguard the appearance and condition of the beaches during the summer months by canalizing the estuary flow from the valleys and by pumping the runoff water seawards, thirdly, to treat the sewage from the town in order to discharge into the Mediterranean sea a good quality effluent which will not pollute the natural envi ronment. The targets were reached by using the most modern techniques: Sewage collection was optimized by installing a computerized management system for the networks, with regular monitored inspections and a preventive cleaning out programme carried out by specialist organizations. The sewage water was treated in an underwater plant in the Port of GOLFE-JUAN. This plant, which is partially automated and invisible on the site, discharges to the sea water which conforms with the foreseen purity levels at an acceptable operating cost.
