The spherical hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAP) were synthesized by hydro-thermal method, and calcium nitrate, terbium oxide, diammonium hydrogen phosphate were used as raw materials with the help of surfactant L-Asparagine. Meanwhile, different amount of Tb was added to investigate the effect of different terbium dropping amount on the properties of HAP. The structure, morphology and luminescent of the obtained HAP that was characterized via X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), fluorescence spectrometer (PL) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Results showed that spherical HAP which in average of 30 nm with good dispersion showed remarkable fluorescent properties and their maximum emission were observed at 543 nm, which could be also excited at uv light region of 377 nm.The optimum mole fraction of Tb was 3%. Therefore terbium-doped spherical HAP of prepared sample would be tracked by flourescence.

Because of the low refractive indices, plate-like cerium phosphates (CePs) are expected to be used as one of active ingredients in personal suncare cosmetics. Plate-like Ce2(PO4)2HPO4・H2O particles were synthesized via solvothermal reactions of Ce(NH4)2(NO3)6 or Ce(SO4)2・4H2O in phosphoric acid with or without nitric acid and sulfuric acid solutions. The variation of morphology of Ce2(PO4)2HPO4・H2O particles significantly depended on the variety of cerium salt, isothermal temperature and time, although all reaction products consisted of plate-like particles. This plate-like compound showed excellent UV light absorption and transparency in the visible light region. Consequently, it is suggested that the plate-like Ce2(PO4)2HPO4・H2O particles might be used as suncare products to give an ideal optical effect of both UV-shielding ability and transparency in the visible light region, as well as a good feeling on the skin.

TiO2 thin films were prepared on SiO2-coated glass substrates using sols deriving from high concentration titanyl sulfate solution by the spin-coating technique. The calcined films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy. The film exhibited high transmittance in the visible light region and high absorption in the ultraviolet region. The contact angle of SiO2/TiO2 decreased to below 5° under 30 min of UV light irradiation and can sustain for 1 weeks.

The search for an alternative to replace conventional fuel has been going on for years due to the limited storage of fossil fuel and excess CO2emission from the fuel. Using H2as fuel has gained wide attention recently, as well as consequently splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen. Seminal semiconductors such as TiO2and ZnO have their position of CB and VB in alignment with water reduction and oxidation potential, respectively, but their wide bandgap allows them to absorb only UV light of the solar spectrum. Combining narrow bandgap semiconductors or other visible light active sensitizers with TiO2/ZnO is a facile route to exploit the visible light region of the solar spectrum. In this review, I make an attempt to summarize the various photosensitizers used in combination with TiO2for water splitting with recent reports as examples.

The Cu1.8Se/CuAgSe nanostructure was synthesized by a simple two-step process. Starting with the template of cubic Cu1.8Se nanoplate by precipitation method, Cu1.8Se/CuAgSe nanostructure and ternary CuAgSe were prepared through a rapid ion exchange reaction using various amount of AgNO3 at room temperature. The as-prepared samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM and DRS. It was found that Cu1.8Se/CuAgSe heterostructure and the pure CuAgSe phase were formed without changing the morphology, and these samples had efficient light absorption from UV light to near-infrared light region. Photocatalytic properties of these samples were evaluated by the degradation of Congo red under visible and near-infrared light. The Cu1.8Se/CuAgSe nanostructure showed enhanced photocatalytic activity due to the lower recombination of charge-carrier in the photodegradation process.

In this paper, Eu3+ -doped CaTiO3 (CTO) nanoparticles were prepared by a sol-gel method. Three different charge compensation mechanisms were realized by substituting Eu ion at different sites. (i) Ca site substitution with Ca vacancy compensation (CTO-A); (ii) Ti site substitution with O vacancy compensation (CTO-B); (iii) simultaneous substitution at both Ca and Ti sites with self-compensation (CTO-AB). Strongly related to the site substitution, the photoluminescent (PL) intensities were increasing in the sequence of CTO-B > CTO-AB > CTO-A. The absorbance spectra analysis of pure CTO nanoparticles showed absorption in the UV light region, while the absorption of Eu -doped CTO samples exhibited the blue shift owing to the presence of Eu3+ . Moreover, the photocatalytic activities of samples for decomposing dyes were reverse to the sequence of PL intensities. The PL properties and photocatalytic activity of the Eu3+ -doped CTO nanoparticles were thus discussed in detail from the viewpoints of the microstructures and charge transfer-related processes.

Sol–gel synthesized N-doped and carbon–nitrogen–sulfur (CNS)-doped TiO2 solutions were deposited on upconversion phosphor using a dip coating method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging showed that there was a change in the morphology of TiO2 coated on NaYF4:Yb,Er from spherical to nanorods caused by additional urea and thiourea doping reagents. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy further verified the existence of nitrate–hyponitrite, carboxylate, and SO42− because of the doping effect. NaYF4:Yb,Er composites coated with N- and CNS-doped TiO2 exhibited a slight shift of UV-Vis spectra towards the visible light region. Photodecomposition of methylene blue (MB) was evaluated under 254 nm germicidal lamps and a 300 W Xe lamp with UV/Vis cut off filters. The photodegradation of toluene was evaluated on TiO2/NaYF4:Yb,Er and CNS-doped TiO2/NaYF4:Yb,Er samples under UV light illumination. The photocatalytic reactivity with CNS-doped TiO2/NaYF4:Yb,Er surpassed that of the undoped TiO2/NaYF4:Yb,Er for the MB solution and toluene. Photocatalytic activity is increased by CNS doping of TiO2, which improves light sensitization as a result of band gap narrowing due to impurity sites.
