This study evaluates the tensile properties, including the tensile strength and elongation at break, and dynamic behavior, including shock absorption and vertical deformation, of an elastic rubber layer in synthetic sports surfaces produced using waste tire chips containing styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The primary variables of the investigation were the number of compactions, resin–rubber granule ratio, and curing conditions, such as aging, the temperature, and the relative humidity. The test results showed an increase in the tensile strength of the elastic rubber layer with recycled SBR as the number of compactions, resin–rubber granule ratio, curing period, and temperature increased, while the elongation at break was affected by the curing temperature and period. Shock absorption and vertical deformation decreased with an increasing resin–rubber granule ratio and number of compactions due to the increased hardness. However, these properties were not significantly affected by the curing conditions. Furthermore, the test results indicated that the curing temperature has a pronounced effect on the tensile properties of the elastic rubber layer, and maintaining the appropriate curing temperature—approximately 50 °C—is a possible solution for improving the relatively low tensile properties of the elastic rubber layer.

The effect of network structure on dynamic compressive fatigue behavior and static compressive mechanical properties of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) were investigated. A series of SBR compounds with different amounts of sulfur and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) were prepared, and their crosslinking densities were calculated using the Flory–Rehner equation. Compressive fatigue resistance and creep behavior of the vulcanizates were performed on a mechanical testing and simulation (MTS) machine. The fatigue damage surface of SBR vulcanizates before and after a dynamic compressive fatigue test was observed with a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results suggested that the surface of the samples was badly damaged as the number of compressive cycles increased. By comparison, compressive fatigue caused less surface damage to sulfur-cured SBR than to peroxide-cured SBR. The peroxide-cured SBR samples showed higher energy dissipation than sulfur-cured SBR during cyclic compression. The peroxide-cured SBR showed lower creep strain and compression set than the sulfur-cured SBR. The -Sx- linkages provided by the sulfur curing system allow dynamic compressive deformation but suffer from poor static compressive resistance. However, the carbon-carbon linkages from DCP are irreversible and provide higher resistance to static compressive stress, but they do not show obvious dynamic compressive fatigue resistance.

ABSTRACT The use of silica to partially replace carbon black is a common practice in the fabrication of “green tires.” Although some degree of consensus has been approached concerning the improved performance conferred by silica substitution, such as the improved dispersion of carbon black, a quantitative understanding of the relationship between filler networking and the performance of rubber composites has not been established. Thus, an investigation focusing on filler network structure and the correlation between the network structure and the reinforcement of rubber composites was conducted. We prepared solution-polymerized styrene–butadiene rubber (SSBR) reinforced by carbon black and carbon black/silica in different ratios. To exclude as much of the effect from changed crosslinking, and figure out how filler blending influences filler dispersion and filler network structure, the silane generally used in the tire industry was not adopted. The quantitative predictor, the mass fractal dimension df, was derived from the Kraus model and the Huber–Vilgis model. We found that when the amount of substituted silica increases, the filler cluster branching decreases, accompanied by increased reinforcement efficiency. The depressed filler networking induced by silica substitution at an appropriate proportion leads to improved dynamic properties, including lower rolling resistance and better wet skid. When the silica proportion in the filler is too high, severe filler networking is observed, resulting in decreased reinforcing efficiency and impaired dynamic properties.
