Bilayers of Sm – Co / Fe have been fabricated on 70 nm Cr buffered Si (100) substrate at an elevated temperature of 650°C by the help of DC and RF magnetron sputtering. Very thin layers (0–0.7 nm) of Ti were introduced at the interface of the Sm – Co and Fe phases. The samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and alternating gradient magnetometer (AGM). All the samples showed strong exchange coupling and single phase behavior. The rise and fall in magnetization and energy product were observed with increasing Ti interlayer thickness. Energy product (BH) max value was found increased by 44% for 0.2 nm Ti interlayer as compared to the sample without Ti layer at interface.

Titanium(III) and copper(II) salts of various dialkyl phosphoric acids have been prepared. Molecular weight measurements on the copper(II) dialkyl phosphates show that they are monomeric in ethanol but aggregate to dimeric forms in chloroform, and to trimeric and tetrameric forms in dichloro- methane, while copper(II) di(2- ethylhexyl) phosphate reaches a molecular weight corresponding to a pentamer in n-hexane. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate the absence of strong exchange coupling in the copper(II) dialkyl phosphates. E.s.r. measurements have been made on the titanium(III) dialkyl phosphates doped into the corresponding indium(III) dialkyl phosphates. Similar measurements have been made on the copper(II) dialkyl phosphates doped into the corresponding cadmium dialkyl phosphates. E.s.r. measurements have been carried out on chloroform and dimethylformamide solutions of the copper(II) dialkyl phosphates and the triplet state spectra observed at 77 K used to extract the magnetic and structural parameters associated with the dimeric forms of the copper(II) dialkyl phosphates. Infrared spectral measurements have been made on the titanium(III), indium(III), copper(II) and cadmium(II) dialkyl phosphates and the major peaks assigned.

Nanocomposite Pr7.5Dy1Fe71Co15Nb1B4.5 ribbons were prepared by melt-spinning and subsequent annealing. Interaction domains were imaged using magnetic force microscopy (MFM) because of strong exchange coupling between hard and soft magnetic grains. Coercivity was determined by exchange coupling pinning field. But the magnetization reversal of nanocomposite magnets were different from that of traditional single phase permanent magnets.

ABSTRACTSingle crystalline spinel structure ferrite thin film bilayers exhibit nearly ideal exchange coupling at room temperature. In these bilayers, the blocking temperature is only limited by the Curie temperature of the (Mn,Zn)Fe2O4. Up to the Curie temperature of the soft (Mn,Zn)Fe2O4 layer, the magnetization loops indicate that exchange anisotropy dominates the magnetization of the soft layer up to magnetic fields on the order of the coercive field of the hard CoFe2O4layer.

Nanocomposite (Nd,Dy)2Fe14B/α-Fe magnets were prepared by directly solidification (DS). The effect of wheel speed on the magnetic properties, microstructure and exchange coupling interaction has been studied. It was found that a uniform R2Fe14B/α-Fe nanocomposite structure with fine α-Fe grains can be developed at an optimum wheel speed of about 18 m/s. Without any heat treatment, the optimal ribbons (v = 18 m/s) show a strong exchange coupling interaction and good magnetic properties, e.g. iHc=1027 kA/m, mr =0.71, (BH)max=174 kJ/m3.
