Objetivo: Analizar el nivel y la relación entre habilidades de comunicación, autoeficacia percibida y síndrome de Burnout en profesionales de la salud del servicio de urgencias hospitalario y unidad de cuidados críticos de un hospital comarcal. Método: Se plantea un estudio observacional y transversal en una muestra de 90 profesionales sanitarios de un Hospital Comarcal, 19 médicos (21,1%), 47 enfermeros (52,2%), 24 auxiliares de enfermería (26,7%). Se han usado la Escala sobre Habilidades de Comunicación en Profesionales de la Salud, el Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey y la escala de la Autoeficacia percibida.Resultados: Se obtiene una correlación negativa entre las diferentes dimensiones de la Escala sobre Habilidades de Comunicación en Profesionales de la Salud, la realización personal en el trabajo del Maslach Burnout Inventory y la autoeficacia percibida con las dimensiones agotamiento emocional y despersonalización del Maslach Burnout Inventory. Por otro lado, se observa una correlación positiva y estadísticamente significativa entre las dimensiones de las habilidades de comunicación con la dimensión realización personal en el trabajo del Maslach Burnout Inventory y la autoeficacia percibida.Conclusiones: Las habilidades de comunicación y la autoeficacia percibida de los profesionales sanitarios en los servicios de urgencias hospitalarios y las unidades de cuidados críticos están relacionadas con un menor agotamiento emocional y despersonalización, y una mayor realización personal en el trabajo. Aim: To analyze the level and relationship between communication skills, perceived self-efficacy and Burnout syndrome in health professionals from the hospital emergency department and the critical care unit of a regional hospital.Method: An observational and cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 90 health professionals from a Regional Hospital, 19 physicians (21.1%), 47 nurses (52.2%), 24 nursing aides (26.7%). The Communication Skills Scale for Health Professionals, the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey and the Scale of Perceived Self-Efficacy were utilized.Results: A negative correlation was obtained between the different dimensions of the Communication Skills Scale for Health Professionals, the personal accomplishment at work of the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the perceived self-efficacy with the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization dimensions of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. On the other hand, a positive and statistically significant correlation was observed between the dimensions of communication skills with the personal accomplishment dimension in the Maslach Burnout Inventory work and the perceived self-efficacy.Conclusions: The communication skills and the perceived self-efficacy of the health professionals in the emergency department and critical care unit are related to less emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and greater personal accomplishment at work.

Background: Effective communication is of paramount importance in delivering patient-centred care. Effective communication between the healthcare personnel and the patient leads to better compliance, better health outcomes, decreased litigation, and higher satisfaction for both doctors and patients. Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a comprehensive blended communication program to improve the communication skills and the confidence level of all staff of a department of emergency medicine in Singapore in dealing with challenging communication situations. Methods: All doctors and nurses working in the selected Children’s Emergency Department (ED) attended blended teaching to improve communication skills. Qualitative feedback was gathered from participants via feedback forms and focus group interviews. Communication-related negative feedback in the ED was monitored over a period of 18 months, from 1st July 2017 to 31st December 2018. Results: Immediately after the course, 95% of the participants felt that they were able to better frame their communications. Focus group interviews revealed four main themes: (A) Increased empowerment of staff; (B) Improved focus of communication with parents; (C) Reduced feeling of incompetence when dealing with difficult parents and; (D) Increased understanding of main issues and parental needs. There was 81.8% reduction in communication-related negative feedback received in the ED monthly after the workshop had been carried out (95% confidence interval 0.523, 0.8182). Conclusion: A comprehensive blended communication workshop resulted in a perceived improvement of communication skills among the healthcare personnel and significantly decreased the communication-related negative feedback in a pediatric ED.

A record outbreak of community-spread COVID-19 started on 10 May 2021, in Taiwan. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, care facilities have adopted various protocols using instant communication technology (ICT) to provide remote yet timely healthcare while ensuring staff safety. The challenges of patient evaluation in the emergency department (ED) using ICT are seldom discussed in the literature. The objective of this study was to investigate the factors influencing the utility of ICT for patient assessment in emergency settings during the pandemic. The patient flow protocol and the ED layout were modified and regionalized into different areas according to the patient’s risk of COVID-19 infection. Nine iPads were stationed in different zones to aid in virtual patient assessment and communication between medical personnel. A focus group study was performed to assess and analyze the utility of the ICT module in the ED. Eight emergency physicians participated in the study. Of them, four (50%) had been directly involved in the development of the ICT module in the study hospital. Three main themes that influenced the application of the ICT module were identified: setting, hardware, and software. The setting theme included six factors: patient evaluation, subspecialty consultation, patient privacy and comfortableness, sanitation, cost, and patient acceptability. The hardware theme included six factors: internet connection, power, quality of image and voice, public or personal mode, portable or fixed mode, and maintenance. The software theme included six factors: platform choices, security, ICT accounts, interview modes, video/voice recording, and time limitation. Future studies should focus on quantifying module feasibility, user satisfaction, and protocol adjustment for different settings.
