Telescopic cranes are usually steel beam systems carrying a load at the tip while comprising at least one constant and one moving part. In this work, an analytical model suitable for the dynamic analysis of telescopic cranes boom is presented. The system considered herein is composed — without losing generality — of two beams. The first one is a jut-out beam on which a variable in time force is moving with constant velocity and the second one is a cantilever with length varying in time that is subjected to its self-weight and a force at the tip also changing with time. As a result, the eigenfrequencies and modal shapes of the second beam are also varying in time. The theoretical formulation is based on a continuum approach employing the modal superposition technique. Various cases of telescopic cranes boom are studied and the analytical results obtained in this work are tabulated in the form of dynamic response diagrams.

Structural shape reconstruction is a critical issue for real-time structural health monitoring in the fields of engineering application. This paper shows how to implement structural shape reconstruction using a small number of strain data measured by fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. First, the basic theory of structural shape reconstruction is introduced using modal superposition method. A transformation is derived from the measured discrete strain data to global displacement field through modal coordinate, which is the same for strain mode shape superposition and displacement mode shape superposition. Then, optimization of the sensor layout is investigated to achieve the effective reconstruction effect. Finally, structural shape reconstruction algorithm using modal superposition method is applied in experiments. The experiment results show that the reconstructed displacements match well with those measured by a laser displacement sensor and the proposed approach is a promising method for structural shape reconstruction.

A simplified method is presented in this paper for the estimation of forces at the base of telecommunication towers mounted on building rooftops due to seismic excitation. Although some codes and standards propose simplified methods for the evaluation of base shear forces for towers founded on ground, no method yet exists for the evaluation of overturning moments. The proposed simplified method is based on numerical simulations using truncated modal superposition, which is widely used for seismic analysis of linear structures. The method requires the prediction of input seismic acceleration at the building–tower interface, the definition of an acceleration profile along the building-mounted tower, and the determination or evaluation of the mass distribution of the tower along its height. The method was developed on the basis of detailed dynamic analyses of three existing towers assumed to be mounted separately on three buildings. It was found that the method yields conservative results, especially for the overturning moments.Key words: self-supporting towers, earthquake, horizontal excitation, dynamic analysis, acceleration, modal superposition.
