An All‐Scale Hierarchical Architecture Induces Colossal Room‐Temperature Electrocaloric Effect at Ultralow Electric Field in Polymer Nanocomposites

The Stability

The room temperature electrocaloric effect is researched for (110) oriented KNbO3 film based on Landau-Devonshire theory. The phase map with different ferroelectric states is built at room temperature with the considerations of thermodynamic equilibrium conditions and minimum of thermodynamic potential. Five ferroelectric structural phases are obtained theoretically. The negative in-plane misfit strains are conducive to form the tetragonal c phase and the positive strains are in favor of the stability of tetragonal a1 and a2 phases. The electrocaloric effect relies on both misfit strain and electric field. Moreover, large electrocaloric effect is achieved in the orthorhombic phases.

In this work, ferroelectric SbSI shows a giant electrocaloric effect at room temperature under very low electric field shift of 0.37 kV cm-1. It is shown that the cooling ΔT per unit field MVm-1 is 2.97. This value is significantly larger, and is comparable with the value of 0.254 for PbZr 0.95 Ti 0.05 O 3 thin film under electric field shift of 30 kV cm-1. Moreover, the reduction in operating temperature opens up many more possibilities and widens the potential for applications in cooling systems.

Abstract Electrocaloric effect (ECE) driven by electric field is suitable for implementation of built-in cooling in electronic devices. However, most of the known electrocaloric materials show low adiabatic temperature change ( ) near room temperature and usually require high electric field. Here, the investigation of ECE in Pb 1+x ZrO 3 (x=0, 0.1, 0.15) thin films, which were prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO 2 /Si substrates by sol-gel method, reveals that both the magnitude and the present temperature range of can be controlled by Pb concentration. Through increasing the dosage of PbO, decreased lead vacancies and enhanced interface layer are induced, which postpone the transition from antiferroelectrics to ferroelectrics of PbZrO 3 films under a given electric field ( E ), which thus controls the appearance temperature range of negative ECE. As a result, large isothermal entropy change ( and are observed in the temperature range from 260 K to 494 K, depending on the applied electric field and Pb concentration. Giant ECE ( , ~0.054) at room temperature (303 K) is obtained in Pb 1.1 ZrO 3 films under 460 kV/cm. This result provides a convenient method for modulating ECE of PbZrO 3 -based materials and will benefit its applications in cooling devices.

Abstract(Ba1−xSrx)(MnyTi1−y)O3 (BSMT) ceramics with x = 35, 40 mol% and y = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 mol% were prepared using a conventional solid-state reaction approach. The dielectric and ferroelectric properties were characterized using impedance analysis and polarization-electric field (P–E) hysteresis loop measurements, respectively. The adiabatic temperature drop was directly measured using a thermocouple when the applied electric field was removed. The results indicate that high permittivity and low dielectric losses were obtained by doping 0.1–0.4 mol% of manganese ions in (BaSr)TiO3 (BST) specimens. A maximum electrocaloric effect (ECE) of 2.75 K in temperature change with electrocaloric strength of 0.55 K·(MV/m)−1 was directly obtained at ∼21 °C and 50 kV/cm in Ba0.6Sr0.4Mn0.001Ti0.999O3 sample, offering a promising ECE material for practical refrigeration devices working at room temperature.
