Although Vanadium dioxide (VO2) has a potential application value for smart energy efficient windows because of its unique phase transition characteristic, there are still many obstacles that need to be overcome. One challenge is to reduce its high transition temperature (ζc = 68 °C) to near room temperature without causing its phase transition performance degradation. In this paper, a novel method was employed that covered a 3 nm ultra-thin heavy Cr-doped VO2 layer on the pure VO2 films. Compared with the as-grown pure VO2, obviously, phase transition temperature decreasing from 59.5 °C to 48.0 °C was observed. Different from previous doping techniques, almost no phase transition performance weakening occurred. Based on the microstructure and electrical parameters measurement results, the mechanism of ζc reducing was discussed. The upper ultra-thin heavy Cr-doped layer may act as the induced role of phase transition. With temperature increasing, carrier concentration increased from the upper heavy Cr-doped layer to the bottom pure VO2 layer by diffusion, and induced the carrier concentration reach to phase transition critical value from top to bottom gradually. The present method is not only a simpler technique, but also avoids expensive alloy targets.

A novel method was proposed for measuring the epitaxial growth rate of diamond by microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD). Cubo-octahedral crystals were formed on an Si(100) wafer and were used as the substrate in the homoepitaxial growth. Growth rates of the {100} and {111} were simultaneously measured from the change in the top view size of crystals. Thus, the relative growth rate of {100} to {111} was obtained without any limitation of its value. The homoepitaxial growth rate was strongly affected by the type of diamond faces, CH4 concentration in the gas phase, and deposition temperature. The growth rate of {100} was more dependent on CH4 concentration than that of {111}, while the activation energy for the [100] growth was about half that for the [111] growth. These tendencies were in accord with growth mechanisms proposed for each diamond plane. Reaction conditions were optimized based on the relative growth rate of (100) to (111) planes, and a highly oriented (100) diamond film with a quite smooth surface was formed on an Si(100) wafer.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/hydroxyapatite (HA) nanocomposites have been successfully fabricated by a novel method for the biomedical applications, which is in situ growing CNTs in HA matrix in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system. The results show that it is feasible to in situ grow CNTs in HA matrix by CVD for the fabrication of CNTs/HA nanocomposites. Multi-walled CNTs with 50-80 nm in diameter have been grown in situ from HA matrix with the pretreatment of sintering at 1473K in air. The nanocomposites are composed with carbon crystals in CNTs form, HA crystallites and calcium phosphate crystallites, one of most important CaP bioceramics. And the CNTs content is about 1% proportion by weight among the composites in our experiments, which can enhance the HA mechanical properties and the CNTs content does not affect the HA performances. These CNTs/HA nanocomposites have the potential application in the biomedical fields.
